Lovely looking yacht Beached in Phuket

Always so sad when seeing this happen. Does anyone have any updated news on it.

Re: Lovely looking yacht Beached in Puket

It's not the time of year to be anchoring on the west side of Phuket.

Kata Beach is exposed to the west, with the entire Andaman Sea for fetch. 11AM to 9PM, winds on April 1st were 15~20kts from the west, which would have created significant swell rolling into that bay.

Here's a more complete story with details of overheating engine, decision to anchor in that bay at night, and a storm that dislodged the anchor...

And more coverage, with additional photos:

Doubt this would have happened if they'd anchored on the eastern side of the island. Perhaps they just didn't have the option.

In any case, best of luck to them getting her off. It is a beautiful looking boat.

Thanks for that. Looks like they are trying.

I wonder if they are CF members.

No signs of blue water deep fryer on board, so probably not.

Re: Lovely looking yacht Beached in Puket

I was sitting in a cafe in Ban Saladan, Koh Lanta (not far from Phuket) a few years ago, watching a charter cat motor confidently into the bay - I looked at the boat and I looked at the large, helicopter-warning-ball festooned power line across the bay, I thought "surely not..." but - the mast smacked into the power cable, BIG flash, boat stopped dead, much running around on deck a la poulet sans tete (headless chook to you non-frogs) , by the time i finished lunch they were trying to get a longtail to tow their dead boat away. Ah, fond memories of Thailand.

Unfortunately, this vessel is being seriously damaged with the attempts to re float it. At this rate there won't be anything left worth saving.

Look for the midnight picture. Boat is sunk up to gunwales at high tide. Pretty sure she's a goner based on that.

It seems like this kind of thing happens often with new boats that aren't in adequate running condition and/or inexperienced new owners. The old raceboat that left Cape cod in winter to go to Australia, and the Westsail that wrecked in California are two examples that come quickly to mind.

Re: Lovely looking yacht Beached in Puket

There are a number of different articles on this floating (or beaching? too soon?) around various sites online. From what I gather, the guys who bought this boat had only just completed a 5-day sailing course. They'd just bought the boat - and refused an offer to help deliver/sail it from the PO.

Says they were caught out in a "freak storm" at anchor, but looking at wind/wave reports from that night, I see nothing to indicate that happened. As I posted previously, they appear to have anchored on the wrong side of the island given conditions this time of year.

Based on that info, it's less surprising to see this has happened.

The latest article says the owners have left Phuket and gone back to Australia. Wonder if they'll ever step foot in Thailand again... or on a sailboat for that matter. As first experiences go, this would be enough to discourage most.

Beyond that... yeah, seems the boat is a total loss. Still, someone's got to get it off the beach. That's one of the more popular tourist beaches on Phuket. Can't have a derelict sailboat spoiling the view!

If the owners have left the scene, it's almost certain the boat has been stripped of all valuables (electronics, mechanics, etc). A half-sunk, ransacked, old wooden boat... worthless unless someone's going to turn it into fire wood.

We were anchored on the west side for a week. There was a bit of west change early but its back to east now, we had no storm but they may have had a squall I suppose, we were 5 miles north of there. We did anchor there a couple of months ago and the holding seemed fine but we had the benefit of the*engine*to check the anchor set. I suspect like most major losses its a combination of*events*and*mistakes*leading to a nasty result.*Anyway bugger
spoiling the view!

We're still there (although I'm in UK at the mo - going back next week ) and I am AMAZED it has not been removed yet. The Thai authorities have stripped the beaches of everything... restaurants, beach huts, deck chairs, umbrellas. Nothing is left to offer comfort for the tourists nowadays. I even came across this article last week: Breaking News: Phuket bans beach sand

So if I understand this correctly, the Thai's are removing the beach so tourist cannot use it? Having spent many years in and out of Thailand, this makes perfect sense.

Re: Lovely looking yacht Beached in Phuket

Removing the sand and fortifying installations for jet ski operators. Yep.

Announcement date was April 1st. Ahem...

In any case, emotions run high around the topic of "proper" beach use on Phuket. Impossibly bad management of the situation by local government has a lot of people - locals, expats, and tourists alike - feeling very frustrated.

Doesn't help that the only people benefiting from the fiasco are the jet ski operators... the very same group who've been unanimously voted as *least desirable* by all who use these beaches.
