Didn't say it was a Bruce but it is a rip off of one and one that could have ended up costing a hell of a lot more than a decent anchor.

Re: Knock Off Anchors

No Idea. A pal just paid $200 for one and thought it was a good deal. It was a 45 pounds one too. I swapped a Bruce look-alike which was quite a good anchor if a bit hard to retrieve, having a shorter shank than a genuine Bruce, for a dozen bottles of lager--real currency in this neck of the woods.

The trouble with this claw type of anchor stems from its ability to clog up in certain types of sticky mud. A large ball of mud jams the anchor which, if it is dislodged from the sea or river floor may then drag indefinitely, or at least until the mud or clay is dislodged. It did hold well in all other situations in which I used it.

I too now use a 60 pounds Manson.

Re: Knock Off Anchors

The original question was about knock-off anchors and I think the answer is if you have to ask if the anchor is any good it isn't worth experimenting with unless you are looking at it as an experiment. In other words, if for some reason you think you have found a great looking knock off that you would like to try, go for it, but I would have another anchor over the side, almost on the bottom, ready to go at a moment's notice, and I wouldn't leave my boat anchored anywhere unattended on an anchor I wasn't very sure about. Sure, experiment, but don't do it without an open mind that just because something looks pretty doesn't mean it works properly. Looks don't tell you much about the quality of an anchor.

Real story is anyone who has replaced the old style anchors for a new generation anchor (manson, sarca, spade, rocna) is happy.

Forget old generation knock-offs.

ecstatic. I've spent more than 100 nights anchored on a Rocna which has never once dragged.

Re: Knock Off Anchors

I have a Danforth plow. It looks the same as the CQR, are all copycats inferior to the original or do quality companies make quality anchors across the board?

Additionally, it's big enough that you could hide behind it in a gun fight.

Well put Rebbel. We have a 75# CQR on our 58 foot Camper-Nicholson. It looks like a toy in the roller next to the tiny 55# plow. We will be going up to a 140# - probably Manson before we leave the Great Lakes. You can NEVER have too much anchor. (well - maybe)

Re: Knock Off Anchors

Found a good CQR at sailboatjunkyard.com They have lots of stuff. Even with shipping a lot of stuff was worth it.

Thumbs down Re: Knock Off Anchors vs Rocna from China

Some good info at West Marine reviews:

The Rocna shanks bend like noodles!

Comments about Rocna Anchors Fixed Shank Scoop Anchors:
If you have been following the boating forums, then you have read that Rocna moved their manufacturing from NZ to China a couple of years ago and then began to immediately make their anchors out of a mild steel which is more likely to bend during a side load. Buyer beware!
West Marine sent out a post card to Rocna customers with a notification of this fact. Check their Product Recall web page.Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

73 lb Rocna By Rum Line II from St. Augustine
Comments about Rocna Anchors Fixed Shank Scoop Anchors:
I got a Rocna 72 lb unit for my 46' sailboat. I have been happy with the performance of the anchor so far, it has been in use for one season (6 month in the Bahamas) I have now received a Product Notice, stating that the metal used in Rocna anchor was produced with steel of a lesser grade then advertised. My problem is that the anchor has been fine in the past but I have not had any extreme conditions for its use. There is a possibility that this Rocna will fail in rough weather conditions.
Although the PRODUCT NOTICE says I can return the Rocna anchor to West Marine for a refund, I am left wondering about the other expenses incurred in the purchasing of the Rocna. Shipping expense was a lot because of the weight. My Anchor launching system had to be altered to accommodate the size, weight and design of the Rocna. Granted it was my choice to do this retrofit to my sailboat but it was done based on the configuration and specs provided to me by West Marine and Rocna. According to their testing, the Rocna was superior to most of the anchors available.
I must admit I'm very disappointed with this purchase of the Rocna now, as well as West Marine for not doing there due diligence of research on the product.
I do not know what will rectify this situation.
Do I keep the anchor knowing that the Rocna may let me down at some time in the future?
Do I change the Rocna for a different brand and eat the expense of changing? …….
Maybe West Marine would retest the Rocna's in question and provide the tolerances to the owners, so we can make an intelligent decision to keep it or return it….

Re: Knock Off Anchors

On my boat My primery is a 45# Delta on 70m 8mm chain. I trust it and can sleep at night. If I had the money and the inclination I would go for the Manson Supreem but they have just bought out a new one called the BOSS,
