On another thread, someone mentioned his insurance covered up to 24 hours of unattended anchoring. I could not fine such a clause in my policy. Is this common? Should I dig deeper?

No, I am not considering anchoring and going away for a week or a month, but sometimes when cruising I might want to leave for several days. Yes, I use very secure and proven tackle.

Similarly, does storage on a fixed mooring have an effect on rates? I use a slip, but I am curious.

If you need to be unattended regularly I would consider a mooring. Should the boat escape it kicks up all sorts of legal, disaster, and damages. What the insurance does cover may not be all the collateral damages.

But it is the unexpected I question. I have been places where neither was viable and a medical emergency required leave-taking. The harbor had only a bulkhead, and was subject to unrelenting surge. Anchoring for 3 days worked fine. No, it was not truly relaxing, for a number of reasons, but not primarily concern over dragging.

And yes, I can see where insurance could fall short. I've never had a claim in 25 years of boating, and intend to continue the trend.

FWIW, I was previously insured w/ Zurich. The policy required the boat to be North of Cape Hatteras, NC from June 1 to Nov. 1. After buying a place in FL, I talked w/ my agent about keeping the boat in FL year round. NO WAY! We then discussed Georgia as I was adamant about not going North. He informed me that Zurich would require me to produce a signed valid contract with a company that would check on the boat several times each week or they would decline coverage! Goodbye Zurich.
