Re: Impromptu mooring buoy creation

Without wading into the legality or advisability of your plan, we used to move 1,000 lb and 1,200 lb mooring blocks with a 16' boat. I think we did it in a 14-footer once.

We'd get the block out to the low tide line, come by in the boat at half tide, tie up tight and wait for the tide to float it up. Then we could maneuver it anywhere we wanted.

There's no problem lifting the weight. Think about it. 4-5 average Americans (won't speak for Canadians) weigh about that much. Your boat will float them. And underwater, things weigh a fraction of what they weigh in the air.

Not sure what your range of tide is, this exact procedure might not work for you. But it should at least prove that it's possible, once you figure out how to secure it and float it.

My opinion. You want your boat to stay safe? Spend the $500 or so on a real mooring. Geez dock rent is about that much where I live a month! Or, get a boat you can trailer and keep it I. The backyard

Re: Impromptu mooring buoy creation

There is a yacht club in Cape Breton that has used them for years. Take a look at what they have done.
