Todays anchor handlers are getting to big to throw around quickly, too much displacement and carry their way quite a bit

Not like that Bash--trunk is boot, hood is bonnet. Sometimes I get a laugh with our car racing teams, which have English, German and American members.
Wings, Quarter panels and calorifiers also cause some headscratching.

IMHO, sailing is probably one of the more standardised endeavours?

Nigel1, I just read your post on the anchor swivel thread. You didn't mention swivels, so does that mean ships don't use them at all?

If it's ok I'll chip in my 2c worth....

I have been on ships with them and without them....

I have been on a ship with a swivel on the port side but none on the stbd side....

If i am on a ship that is due for dry docking and it has swivels i will do my best to have em removed, already lost one anchor to a swivel i don't plan on loosing another....

Hi Don,

some do, some dont, most have them as far as I know, but they are the weakest part of the system, and at dry docking we give them a thorough inspection.
All anchors lost on our company''s boats have been down to swivel failure.

What about on your own boat? John says no way, and after all I've read, I tend to agree, but I'm about to add more chain and was considering one due to ongoing trouble with chain twisting around my snubber.

I'll be anchoring out most of the time due to low liquidity issues, i.e., I'm broke...

On my work boat (large tug) both anchors have swivels.'
My own proper boat, the one with sails, does not. Have 70m of chain at the moment, I've not spent that many days on the hook, but the PO did, and between us we have not had an issue (yet).
If it becomes one, a swivel might be considered, but I hope not, the less things to go wrong the better

My boat had 9x20# lead pigs in the chain locker which I removed when I added the bow roller, 35# CQR, and 200' of chain. The net effect was to add about 60#s.

That's been a bit of a problem, which I admit another 100' would only exacerbate.

dont let anyone give you crap about how much chain you carry Mark... they'll someday come across a coral head or sharp rock that makes minc-meat of their anchor "rope", and wish they had chain.....
And by the way, we carry 400 ourselves........
