Re: How many anchors do you have?

2 45# CQR w/150' 3/8 chain & 150' 7/8 line.
Fortress FX-37 mounted on stern rail w/150' nylon 7/8 rode.
22 ton 44' steel.
Have only used one anchor cruising San Juan Islands to Alaska anchoring in inclement winter weather.

Re: How many anchors do you have?

On my 42’ 30,000 pound Boat I have a Ronca 25kg as primary, Bruce 33 and a big Danforth, each with its own rode.

Other anchors I have are my wife, 2 adult children, 3 grandchildren about to become teenagers. They keep me grounded and centered and don’t allow any dragging.

Re: How many anchors do you have?

It depends upon where we cruise.

Since we like higher latitudes and remote locations— and have lost anchors before— we kept all 5 that came with our boat, and added one... [A 45KG Spade]

-Two are on the bow ready for immediate deployment. [99lb Spade, and 80lb SuperMax] We only deploy one at a time. The second is just a hot spare.
-One on the stern with a reel of webbing rode ready for immediate deployment. [Fortress FX-27]
-One is stowed in custom secure chocks on deck. [60lb genuine CQR]
-Another Fortress is stowed dismantled in a bag below decks [FX-37]
-And a 100lb Luke [Fisherman] stowed dismantled in custom secure mounts against the hull.

Our ketch displaces 22 tons cruising weight, and we have 550ft of chain [plus rope rode] between the two bow anchors.

If you are interested, here is an up-to-date, detailed inventory of our ground [and storm] tackle.

Cheers! Bill

Re: How many anchors do you have?

37' aft cockpit sloop displacing 10 tons.

Full-time liveaboard and I've cruised from Mexico to Alaska, currently in Sequim, WA.

35lb Delta on the bow roller with a rode consisting of 150' of chain and 300' of line with a self-deploying windlass.

20lb fluke with 200' of rope and chain rode easily accessed in the aft lazarette. Often thought about using my dinghy to set the fluke but never needed to.

The Delta with it's weight to holding ability is the best anchor I've owned and has always done the job.

If I lose one I'll replace it, but anchors are not something I relish stowing in a locker and I've got enough gear on the pulpit and pushpit as it is.

Re: How many anchors do you have?

I think you have enough--unless you are pasting them in an album and your collection is as yet incomplete--.

I have two Mansons, 60 pounds and thirty pounds and a coral pick, and two heavy kellets both weiging about ten kilograms each. They are cast iron kettle weights and I use them chained with about a metre of chain for easy fitting and removal from the main chain anchor rode. I have never dragged an anchor, but I have never anchored in gravel or loose sandy bottoms.

Re: How many anchors do you have?

I have 4 on a 23k# boat.

On the bow I have a 20kg Spade, usually attached to 300' of chain. Great anchor.

On deck beside the bowsprit I have a 45# CQR, with chain and line rode. A solid anchor but not as high-performance as others.

On the pushpit I have a 20# Hi-Tensile Danforth with its rode wound on a reel. The perfect anchor for holding off a Med-moor (old harbors usually have soft mud bottoms, ideal for this design).

And below I have a 50# Luke Yachtsman (Herreshoff), with 3/8" chain and 5/8" line rode. Particularly useful in rocks. Comes apart for easy storage.

I will be juggling these a bit. I intend to buy a 20kg Vulkan for the bower, move the take-apart Spade below for the spare, and sell the Luke.

FOR SALE: 50# Luke, in Portland. Never used but some galvanizing off. Price TBD.

-75# Danforth for those "Aw-s__t occasions

Have used them all at one time.

I like it. Thank you.
How do you protect the rail as the chain comes over it?

I would install an anchor roller .
I don't use anchors with lots of chain off the stern on my boat. But it is the same way I retrieve the bow anchor when the windlass failed. Always good to know alternatives when the shtf.

Question Re: How many anchors do you have?

I've always believed the size/length of chain is more important
|Bill

[QUOTE=Olly75;2662569]This, hopefully, isn't a question about the best type of anchor, cause I really don't want to be responsible for opening that can of worms again, but a more general q's about the number that people have on board.

Re: How many anchors do you have?

Thanks to the PO, my 6600lb Bristol 27 has 5 anchors.

A 20 lb CQR on the bow with 30' of chain and 250' line, a backup Bruce with maybe 40' of chain and 300' of line, a Danforth probably large enough to hold the boat and two smaller anchors for the PO's dinghy I'm guessing.

I've only used the old CQR that's on the bow for the last 7 years though but have the Bruce available as backup
