Flopper Stopper: Design Needed
I am looking for a design for a flopper stopper that I can make myself. If you know of any that are tested and trustworthy please share. I have looked at Larry Pardy's but am interested in other sailors ideas and what has worked for them. I have a 43 ft Endeavor sailing vessel.

Ha! That's funny, because I was thinking EXACTLY the same thing but didn't have the guts to post.
Sorry to the OP, I am sure you have something else in mind.

I would look at a commercial fishing vessel supply store,or port. most boats with outriggers have them. we call them birds, I use 200lb ones on commercial vessels. there are several different sizes that are galvanised with lead noses. You can make them out of stainless and tune the depth and weight accordingly. gotta play with the harmonic balance and depth so they dont hit the boat or go in the wheel or vibrate and make humming noise.

Re: Flopper Stopper: Design Needed
Larry's work well, especially in tandem.
They are a strain on the boom or spinnaker pole though, so make sure you have adequate support up to the masthead. Cheap, efficient and easily made by anyone who can find an old milk crate.
You could use 2'x4' lighting cage from Home Depot (cut in smaller pieces, of course) for the bottom, but I would be concerned about the resiliency.

'just an added question about your application,- is this for generic use at various locales or are you looking for a solution at a specifc anchorage? Is it swells at the bow or refracted waves around a point? ...wakes? There are some techniques at anchor that can change your pesentation to the waves. Tell us more.

Well the pink one my wife liked.
We plan on anchoring in Hawaii and many people have said that the wave action is high.
Sail boat heavy and is ketch. have a wisker pole.

Below are Top and Bottom snaps of a "Flopper Stopper" we had made in early 1987 for our prior boat, a 1976 Cal 2-29. It measures 18" wide by 24" long with the frame made of 1/4" diameter steel rods bent to shape and welded together. The diaphram consists of 3/32" nylon sheeting, split in an X-shape as shown. The top and bottom frames are rivited together and a suspension bridle of 36" long 1/8" stainless wires swaged together around small thimbles connects to each corner and a 2" diameter ring at the center. Suspended 8 to 10 feet deep off the end of our 11' log spinnaker pole supported with a topping lift and fore and after guys, the device did a good job of stabilizing our Cal. Similarly suspended from the end of our 17' long spinnaker pole off the side of our current yacht, the device does an admerable job. When using such a device it is wise to actually use a snatch-block on the pole end so that the depth can be adjusted. It is also wise to hang a chem-lite or other illumination on the outboard end and at mid-length so that some unsuspecting person doesn't behead himself in the dark.
FWIW...

Re: Flopper Stopper: Design Needed
When anchored out in the bahamas I used 5gal buckets. I would cut the bottoms out leaving a 2 inch lip and inserting a clear plastic bottom with 5200, tie a rope thru top and add a brick or weight to make it drop. tie rope to rail, the up action in the bucket would stop rocking in one or two rolls. The glass bottom bucket worked as a viewing box for shelling or chonch finding as well as checking anchor My boat size close to yours Morgan 416

Re: Flopper Stopper: Design Needed
We used the commercially made version of the kind that Hylite posted.
It worked very well.
We used 3 strand nylon with an added mooring compensator on the line from the whisker pole to the flopper stopper.
The length of the line put the stopper close to the bottom in the shallowest likely depth we'd be comfortable for anchoring.
The whisker pole had a spinnaker halyard to support the extended end and a bungie cord held it in place around a mast lower shroud.
We wrapped the whisker pole with leather to prevent chafe at that point.
The stopper was stored in a sunbrella bag made to fit and attached to the lifelines at the deployment point.

Re: Flopper Stopper: Design Needed
I was on a friends boat in Mexico and theirs worked well. It was a commercially made one but would be easy to do. Two stainless sheets hinged together and then swung out with the boom. They folded up like a book and and opened to a flat plane. Similiar to this: Boat Roll Stabilizers, Flopper Stoppers, At Anchor Roll Stabilizers, Marine Stabilizers

Wheel balancing weight, on rim, tips the bucket, allowing it to fill & sink.
