If you own either the 8 or the 10 version of the HRC...
Can you easily remove the chain from the gypsy so that you can use the capstan? I am looking to use the capstan separately from the anchor chain/rode.

I'm not sure if this will help you or not. I have an older Maxwell 1200 so different to yours. On the 1200 the clutch operates the gypsy only and not the capstan. In other words you can loosen the clutch so the gypsy free wheels but the capstan will stay engaged. Cheers

We have the HRC10, and it is like Owe says - just loosen the gypsy clutch and the capstan works without turning the gypsy. So you can just leave your chain in place while you use the capstan.

Using the Capstan Drum for Rope Warping:
The capstan can be used independently from the chainwheel.
This is ideal for handling mooring or dockinglines, or retrieving a second anchor.
For safety reasons, a footswitch is highly recommended.
To haul in using the capstan:
Make sure the anchor is secured.
Insert the clutch handle into the clutch nut and turn anticlockwise until rotation stops.
This will release the
mechanism so that the chainwheel remains stationary while you operate the capstan.
Take three turns of rope around the drum in a clockwise direction.
While holding the tail of the rope, press the "Up" footswitch. The capstan will rotate clockwise.
