Chafe protection on deck - anchor chain

My anchor chain goes from the bow roller and about 10ft aft to the windlass. I want to protect the deck....any suggestions what to add?

1) a piece of teak
2 glass a slightly concave strip...which also makes the water and dirt to stay in the strip and don't make the rest of the deck dirty

Should I also use some stand up rollers? Or would that xrra height of the chain make it A pain?

I've seen someone cut a long section of pvc pipe. Cheap. Waterproof. And when it wears put, easy to replace.

Re: Chafe protection on deck - anchor chain

On our boat I used just a bit of thin s/s sheet metal. Held down with Sika 291 or similar (don't remember which one!). Mine is about 150 mm wide and stretches from the end of the stem head fitting and bow roller channel to just in front of the gypsy. Yours would be much longer!

Has worked well for some 15 years now.

I reckon that timber or as Jim suggested, stainless would be good. I would be very wary of positioning rollers along it, guaranteed to stub toes or trip over.

Re: Chafe protection on deck - anchor chain

With a shorter run across the deck we use a car mat which lives in the anchor locker when not in use. I suppose one day it will blow overboard and I might have to buy another, but it was cheap enough.

I've used vinyl non-skid tape. Last a few years and is nearly invisible.

Second the plastic pipe. Wooden blocks under to support and keep the pipe a bit above deck..

I used SS, had titanium available too, bu Ti I believe scratches way easier.
Only thing holding it down is the chain stopper.
Yes I know the teak is ratty.

Re: Chafe protection on deck - anchor chain

10-ft of teak plank - boy some of you yachties are rich ... and have time to varnish stuff. For a shorter run, I've used the stainless plate idea, but it won't keep the mud in place. Personally, I'd worry about too much raised stuff on a foredeck for all the tripping and stubbing it will cause. I suggest protecting your deck with a flat plate, and investing in a wash-deck pump to spray the muck overboard at the end. Starboard is wonderful stuff, but you cannot glue it down.

I would purchase a strip of white Plastic sheet
Advantages
1. low cost
2. easily replaceable
3. Less noise as it will dampen the chain impact

Flat metal plate. 1/8" or heavier (maybe 3/16") in aluminum, steel or S.S.
I would gently round the (sharp) upper edges with a sanding wheel on an angle grinder before attaching to deck. Checker plate would be very cool but maybe noisier plus collect more dirt.

Re: Chafe protection on deck - anchor chain

This works well and I call it my chain ditch. 18ga 304 stainless with a scotchbrite finish. Any sheet metal shop can shear and form easily. Just stuck it down with Sikaflex, a heat gun will take it off.

Re: Chafe protection on deck - anchor chain

The factory built mine w/ a white Starboard panel screwed to the deck between the bow roller and the windlass.

The panel has a ¼ round routed around the perimeter.

It has been working fine.

Re: Chafe protection on deck - anchor chain

On our boat we have a strip of Ironwood screwed/glued to the deck perhaps 3"/75mm wide & 3/8"/10mm thick with rounded edges, runs from the back of the stem head fitting and bow roller cut to shape around the front of the windlass; been there working well since 2012 - thanks for the bit of wood Hugh & Brenda on S/Y Scotia!
