Cayman Windlass

I installed a new windlass this year. It is the same make as the old one, Lofrans Cayman, but is much slower. Particularly noticeable when letting out chain. Anyone know if they have changed the gearing over the years? The old one was at least 20 years old, maybe 30.

Re: Cayman Windlass

Are you certain that the clutch is fully disengaged?
In the Lofrans’ anchor windlasses the main shaft and the gypsy are connected by a couple of conical discs called clutch. They are normally engaged by screwing the top star shaped nut. To engage or disengage the clutch you have to insert the supplied handle in this nut. By disengaging the clutch the gypsy stays free and the weight of the anchor pulls down the released chain.

Re: Cayman Windlass

I also have a Cayman.

I think they make two models of Caymans, with different wattage motors. That could explain differing gearing.

Thanks, that may be the answer. The new windlass is 1000W. I don't know what the old one was. There is a big difference and so I now let the chain out on the clutch.
