Re: Catalina 30 fin keel flat sheltered mud beach tidal layover safe?

If the boat can't be careened it isn't safe to sail. May need to put in the companionway wash boards to be sure it doesn't flood below but that's about it. Have done it unintentionally on both full and fin keel boats without a problem.

Re: Catalina 30 fin keel flat sheltered mud beach tidal layover safe?

Doubt it will be a problem. Have done this a few times with FRP & plywood hulls with fin keels with no problems on sand. Did it once inadvertantly with a wing-keeled ply hull 30 footer that crashed over whilst we were ashore partying & didnt seem to suffer any damage unlike our egos. Nothing ( shockwise) compared to falling off a wave or getting smashed in the side by a good sea IMHO. Go for it

I would contact Catalina and ask to speak with Gerry Douglas and ask him. I am sure he's thought about it, and has probably got 10 examples of why this works, or doesn't work.

so you careened without closing seacocks, fuel tank vents, securing lockers closed, and keeping rudder exactly fore and aft? Must have made quite a mess with the diesel fuel spilling all over the place.

It will and it does. In the water, the keel can swing downward to maintain boat stability. Can not do that resting on land. The water has to be high enough to float most of the hull before the keel will start to rise to any appreciable extent. For old boats, not much of a problem with a lot of the hull being the keel; but with fin keels, no buoyancy from the keel at all.

Hope he takes a youtube video of the event. That should be one funny video.

Hmmm, but many fin keel boats can heel over to 45 degrees while sailing without taking on water, no?

Re: Catalina 30 fin keel flat sheltered mud beach tidal layover safe?

An owner of a Hunter 34 fin keel boat across from me in the marina careens his boat annually to clean. No problem. I think he is taking a risk but so far so good...

Re: Catalina 30 fin keel flat sheltered mud beach tidal layover safe?

I'd like to do this with my fin keel, skeg rudder Pearson as well. Just for the experience and it fits my low budget boating lifestyle.

If water would come in before the boat begins to float more upright, then why wouldn't it flood in before the boat settles on it's side as the tide goes out?

I think some slope to the sea floor would add a margin of safety but not absolutely necessary.
