Brushes for Windlass Motor

Having problems finding brushes for a Lewmar windlass. The motor is a Lemac model#65579-053 made by Lothian Electric in Scotland. Have tried to contact them, no joy so far. Any help greatly appreciated. Lewmar USA is not open till Jan 8.

Re: Brushes for windlass motor

Ask around at your marina/boatyard and find a local auto electric shop who does motor repair. They can usually adapt similar brushes to fit by grinding down the sides to slip in the brush holder.

I did that with my long discontiued Simpson-Lawrence windlass. Cost about $200 including new bearings but was much cheaper than a new windlass.

BTW, that motor was British made and the company was still in business and has a website. They never responded to an email inquiry.

Re: Brushes for windlass motor

The motor is in Indian River Batteries here in Vero Beach. They are the biggest automotive electric place around here and do all sorts of motors. They are unable to source the brushes. Thanks for the tip. I will suggest grinding down brushes. Did it work ok?

Give Florida Rigging &Hydraulics a try, they rebuilt my old SL windlass and they are a Lewmar master parts distributor. 800-718-1649.

The brushes may not be unique to Lemac motors. Try an automotive or small motor shop.

Re: Brushes for windlass motor

On my Maxwell Freedom 800 Windlass 1000 Watt, I modified larger brushes that I found for a starter motor. Just sanded them down to a slip fit with a full sheet of 80 grit sandpaper.
Worked for four years before I sold the boat (Catalina 380) and may still be working for all I know.
