Anyone tried a Vulcan anchor?

I have absolutely no interest in starting an anchor war but curious. We spent some time in Cape Town and Namibia with Peter Smith just after he had picked up the prototype of what became the Vulcan anchor from a university in CT. How does the Vulcan compare to a regular Rocna? I can an advantage to be gained when you transfer weight from the loop into the actual anchor. On the other hand, not much good if it tends to sit on the bottom upside down.

I guess they are too new. Probably a better question to ask at the end of the northern summer.

Re: Anyone tried a Vulcan anchor?

I like ours alot. We had/ have a rocna but with the bowsprit its a PITA so it went to backup status. Without intention the 1st time we ended up using it was in a sustained 50-60knot gale that came through last fall. Dumped it out in Blind bay and I think it had set already around 2-1 scope as we were falling back. Have plowed a furrow in real soft bottom after moving around to a different spot and not getting the blade 100% clear. It tends to bring up a large amount of the bottom when you haul it.

Overall very happy so far.

Re: Anyone tried a Vulcan anchor?

Curious if I can revive this old thread. Vulcan anchors have been around for 5 years now, but there are still very few hands on reviews published. They aren't included in any of the major performance comparison tests that I've found.

I have a bowsprit, and am looking for a modern anchor with no rollbar. Chandleries in British Columbia carry Vulcans (but not Spades). I'd love to hear more feedback if anyone has been using one for a while now.

Thanks!

Re: Anyone tried a Vulcan anchor?

We have a 44 lb VULCAN which we have been using since 2015 on our 35’ ATKIN cutter. Would buy another without question.

As this post stands it isn't too useful to us.

Could you please elaborate a bit...

What sort of rode?
What sort of bottoms have you encountered?
Does it come up clean or choked?
What scope do you typically use?
Have you used it in any extreme conditions, and with w hat results?
Does it reset well in wind shifts?
Any other specific bits of lore?

These sorts of details are what separates the wheat from the chaff in anchor comparisons, not the blanket "would buy another" sort of comment.

No disrespect intended here, but with data so rare on this anchor, lots of folks would like to know more.

Jim

Re: Anyone tried a Vulcan anchor?

Hello Jim,
We use a 55kg Vulcan, it’s a replacement for our 80kg Mantus. We replaced the Mantus for the simple reason it was too difficult to launch and retrieve.
So far the anchor has proven to be dependable, launches easily and has held the boat fine. We use all chain, typically 4/1 scope and the bottom is usually sand or sea grass, it comes up clean. I cannot comment on its ability to reset but trust it would with such a short shaft. The most wind it’s seen is 35 knots with maybe 2~3 foot waves. Our boat weighs 65,000#’s and the rig is 93’.
Cheers,
Joli

Re: Anyone tried a Vulcan anchor?

thanks Joli,

Interesting that you replaced a much heavier Mantus with a smaller Vulcan, and that so far it has performed well on moderate scope. 35 knots isn't a severe test, but more than lots of folks ever encounter. And a 93 foot mast must have a lot of windage!I

I'm not in the market for a new anchor, but lots of cruisers are, and this sort of info is the next best thing to controlled tests. Thanks for posting.

Jim

Re: Anyone tried a Vulcan anchor?

Hello Jim, the simple reason we went down to 55kg was that was the largest Vulcan they made. According to the sizing guide it should handle up to a 100,000# boat of our length.

We liked the Mantus but it didn’t self launch and man handling a 175# anchor with a 5’ shank was dangerous. The problem with the roll bar type anchors is their length, it’s tough to clear sailing gear as they tip over the bow roller, the long shank and attachment gear hangs up on everything. For us it doesn’t work but if a boat has enough room to allow the anchor shank to angle upwards and clear everything it should self launch.

We’ll post more as we gain more experience.
