Re: Anchor Shackle

Use the Crosby high strength alloy shackles. You will find that Crosby rates these very conservatively, the minimum breaking strength is 5 times the WLL. If you use the largest size shackle that will fit your G40 chain the shackle breaking strength will equal/exceed the breaking strength of the chain.

Re: Anchor Shackle

There is a good general article on anchor shackles here:

And a good article on practical tests conducted on shackles here:

a 3/8 shackle should fit your 5/16 HT chain. I have also used SS high quality forged shackles rated at far higher than the chain. (Wichard) as mentioned just keep track of any rust ocurring. I really cant say rust occurred on the first few links any faster with the SS shackle than the other way. Either way, easy to remove a few links every year or so

Re: Anchor Shackle

I'm pleased with my experineces using the Crosby shackles on my 5/16"Amer-Hi-Test not only at the anchor, but at locations where I join shots of chain with two Crosby shackles along the length of my rode.

Although this might seem like an easy answer for most, there is one thing that makes me scratch my head a little.

So if the anchoring system is only as strong as it's weakest link, I'm having a hard time finding a shackle that will match the specifications of the chain.

The chain is 5/16 HT, the anchor is a Mason supreme 45lbs and the boat is 18,000lbs

I've been looking at the Crosby shackles rated at 3/4t. Now I figure that it's probably more than enough but the working load of the chain is more than double that (if I'm not mistaken) so is there an alternative?

Also, I've see a few opinions out there about using SS shackles. Should I stay away from them?

Is there a specific difference with an anchor shackle VS a regular shackle?

Thanks
Maybe this will help.

Re: Anchor Shackle

I have done the same thing and it is a great solution it makes the shackle quite smooth so it does not catch on anything. The super strong "A" shackle may or may not be needed depending on your chain strength (g7, g4, or g3) and if you have a larger end link, but it is cheap insurance even if its overkill.
I would always use a quality shackle the rated lifting shackles at least provide some reassurance of quality control

Special flush shackles are available, but are difficult to source especially in the stronger designs and usually cannot be moused. (Although you can use locktight)

We use what we call a "hammerlock" It runs about 3 times the strength of a shackle for the same size.
I have had a heck of a time this morning trying to find some examples on line. Here are the two I came up with.

If you are on either coast check with a comerical fishing outfit.

The Gunnebo is what we use. The highlandrigging does not give a very good presentation. Crosby and Campbell chain also make hammerlocks. On Gunnebo they call them "Coupling Link G'

It always baffled me how you had all this high strength chain and anchor and then use a shacle that is so much lower in working load.
First link I did not see anything called "hammerlock". Second link was 404 error.

Re: Anchor Shackle

Nigel Calder's Cruisers Handbook has a great section on anchor shackles. IIRC, most folks put the anchor through the pin and the chain on the rounded end of the shackle.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, haven't had a chance to go look it up. Yet...

You would have a pretty small shackle that way.
