Anchor Roller Refurbishment?

My Anchor Roller needs refurbishment.




Is there any reason the rollers are normally in a solid lump? It occurred to me that I could just replace the middle of the roller, so two tapers on the sides, and a flatter section in the middle. Something like this:



For the axles I hope to bore and tap the existing rods and use countersunk M6 A2 screws, countersinking the side plates. Is this a good plan?

Has anyone else replaced their rollers? How did you do it?

Further to this, I've made a start on cutting the rollers. For the larger roller I'm using part of the old one, tidied up with a 45° slope.

My proposed new shape is as follows, the existing roller parts are shaded:

The central flat section is 40mm wide, the width of the anchor where it joins the chain. The curved groove is 12mm wide and deep, for 10mm chain. The dotted bar is the 16mm axle.

My question is how much "wear room" should I leave around the axle? The drawing shows 10mm top and bottom.

I've found less need to adhere to a specific roller shape or to have the "slot" at the center to track the rode in place. I would think that the big outer 'shoulders" would be sufficient. With this thought, I've been successful replacing my anchor rollers with selections from boat trailer rollers "off the shelf".



This approach might not suit your needs, but I find that these hard trailer rollers have done well for me and lasted about ten years with frequent use.
