Anchor chain, when to swap ends, replace.
I have 110m of 10mm chain that superficially looked good, however recent anchoring wows, made me suspect the chain didn't match the gypsy anymore. Looking further into it found that my chain had been wearing at the links at instead of being 10mm some are 7mm. Now on a Vertical windlass with nine links in contact with the gypsy that wear has caused a staggering 54mm out of mesh, no wonder I had troubles with chain jump.
By my estimate a 7mm chain has half the area of a 10mm chain. Maybe half the strength.
I think its time to discard some of that 110metres, too late to end for end.
But thought I'd ask:
When do you determine to End for end, use joiner or chuck it.

Long links, that's when the chain is really worn out, that and the mess on deck from all the rust.

If the chain was smaller I would be rid of it if it was me.
Just curious, how old is the chain?

Re: Anchor chain, when to swap ends, replace.
Re-galvanizing chain that has what I call, “superficial rust” is certainly exceptable. Switching ends is also acceptable as long as the section you cut off due to deterioration of metal is not so great that you feel the remaining length is insufficient for your anchoring technique and choices.
However, I would never re-galvanize a chain if there was significant enough that there was metal loss or deformity due to rust and corrosion. You may think you removed the length you can see you do not trust but there is probably a good chance what you do not see might be weak.

Grats on being smart enough to realize the linkage wear will lengthen the chain. I would think it is replacement time. JMHO

Op here, don't know how old chain is. I expect only to lose 30m as the rest in locker appears clean & unused, have heard that there is some cheap chain out there with insufficient galvanising.

About ten years ago by the sounds of that.
Don't dick around with chain, your life and others may well depend on it
