Yachting Monthly (I think; or maybe it was PBO) tested the actual chains, and found no difference in actual strength. So while the G30 chain had a much more modest rating, it's actual strength was equal to the G40.
In the test that you mention:

1) has any of the chains broken under its rated breaking load?

If G3 is as strong as G4 then that's good for all G3 owners, including myself.

NOW, if G4 broke at G3 rating this could lead to some very serious consequences for ACCO, MAGGI and other makers who made any claims.

2) have you heard of any such claims?

It could have been the same test though. I think I was reading YM too.

Re: Anchor chain redux

Guys just as a reminder, though G4 chain is stronger than G3 counterpart... 50% stronger... Not 100% as looking at working load limit numbers suggests.

See here Mantus Anchors | Why is it so hard to size shackles, swivels for G43 Chain?

In short if you want to compare the relative strengths look at the ultimate breaking strength not the working load limit as the two chain types use different safety factor to calculate working load limit.

Also the swivel that is stronger than the hi test chain of the same size...is almost here....... stay tunned

My guess is that it's all G40 now, and they just label and sell some of it as G30. They just stopped making G30. By the way, this may apply to only a limited number of makers in a limited market -- YMMV. But it seemed to be true of all of the chain tested in YM.

Which implies that actual G40 chain may be a waste of money.
Unless you need it to fit in your windlass.
