Anchor Chain Grip alternatives?

We have been using a Wichard Anchor Chain Grip but recently the pin keeps bending. Even when there isn't a twist in the bridle or chain, we are experiencing a bent pin. I saw online that Mantus has a new product, but it only comes in 1/4" chain size.
Does anyone know of a product besides the Wichard or Mantus hooks that also have a securing pin or locking bar on it? Not a big fan of something that doesn't have a securing mechanism. Any insight would be appreciated.

That chain Hook was available in all sizes, perhaps mantus is no longer producing that hook as they have a new style available. I have used and Still own both style of hooks. The new style is made out of duplex stainless and has a rubber strap that prevents it from falling off the chain I believe it is available in all sizes

How about a soft shackle with a chafe guard?

This is what I use. https://www.amazon.com/DasMarine-Sha.../dp/B07FLVP15G

^^ yea, soft shackle is the solution. Very easy to use, inexpensive. You don’t really need chafe protection, particularly if you can make your own soft shackle (which is easy to do). Personally I think this is one of the few places you should use one of the “extra strength” designs (which the commercial soft shackles tend NOT to be).

Re: Anchor Chain Grip alternatives?

I think I've tested most of them. For catamarans, specific hooks can be easier to fire on with one-hand. For monos and tris, that recover the chain over rollers on a skinny bow, either a soft shackle or prusik hitch is smoother and easier.

It's easy to think metal will be more durable, but experience shows the fiber solutions are very, very dependable.

+1 for soft shackle.

never gets stuck
never falls off
easy to deploy and retrieve
will not damage galvanizing
lasts a long time
can make them yourself

Once you've made a few you will start to find many uses for them on the boat.

How is soft shackle applied? Are we attaching it to the chain and a deck fitting. Photo anyone. Russ

That is a link to the 'Traditional Mantus Chain hook'. Here is the link to the 'New' Mantus Chain Hook:

https://www.mantusmarine.com/m2-chain-hook/

It looks like the new chain is available in all sizes. I wonder if they are discontinuing the traditional for the new.

I've had the traditional in both 3/8" and 5/16. We love it. I've never tried the new model.

Re: Anchor Chain Grip alternatives?

why use a chainhook at all, just tie rope directly to the chain with a rolling hitch

Mantis has the swivel you need, tell them Marc @ O’neal Tech Marine recommended them. I was with them yesterday.

Re: Anchor Chain Grip alternatives?

I have the older style Mantus and am very happy with it. The design is simple and works well every time. I am not a fan of pins that are going to receive a heavy load. There is no pressure applied to closure so it should last a good long time.

Re: Anchor Chain Grip alternatives?

Have you considered enlarging the hole or getting a stronger pin made at a machine shop of a super strong alloy through hardened.

I like the rolling hitch as well. The snubber is never tied exactly in the same place in the line so chafe is not all that big of a deal...(until it is), and when it does show wear just chop that piece off a bit and you have a fresh "end". It is simple; no moving parts, doesn't fall off when retrieved, and you can't beat the price.
