Re: Anchor Chain

Looking at Campbells website, or that of the parent, it is very difficult to see where they sell their marine chain (unless they sell through hardware stores) or as an 'own label' for someone like Wests.

Has anyone bought any of Campbells marine chain. Apex is well known, even here in Oz, through their Crescent brand - but cheoah (and the absence of anyone mentioing them other than GordMay suggests Campbells they are not well known.

Our Serafini here is exactly the same, been making for decades but virtually unknown except locally in Brisbane.

Re: Anchor Chain

Many hardware stores in the US sell Campbell agriculture and industrial chains. 1st Chain Supply sells Campbell marine chain. I don't think any of the large chandleries in the US sell Campbell marine chain, although Fisheries Supply sells proof coil from them.

I have used Campbell shackles on moorings and they are high quality on par with Crosby.

Re: Anchor Chain

Thanks Mark,

I am constantly amazed (and my experiences are not American but UK and Oz) at how many companies survive and remain unknown. Crosby comes up frequently on these threads as does ACCO (primarily for their G7 (but they also appear on Wests)) and of course CMP (who are big in chains) - Campbell, just proves maybe you do not need to advertise? You obviously endorse some of Campbells products (and I am sure the rest can be of equal quality) - but no-one mentions them.

Re: Anchor Chain

Apparently Campbells only make a short link G3 (and maybe BBB) but the market in America is primarily G4 and G43 (is this correct?) and thus Campbells are not well known because they do not service the bulk of the market. 1st Chain sell both Peerless and Campbells. Basically if you want American short link HDG you buy from Peerless/ACCO.

Well a lot of US boats do use BBB or proof chain so there might be some market for Campbells chain here.

But as far as options on G43 I'm coming to the same conclusion as you after researching new chain. The only options for chain gypsies I have on my old Simpson Lawrence windlass fit 3/8" BBB or one for 5/16" ISO short link 5/16". Might get some other spec chains to work in one or the other but pretty much focusing on the G43 which leaves me with Acco.

Re: Anchor Chain

Grades of chain:
G4, aka G40, aka proof coil chain, aka loggers chain: moderate strength, sold in hardware stores & Home Depot, good for general purpose use.

G6, aka G63, aka DOT chain, aka truckers chain, aka high test: stronger than G4, 3/8" is approved by DOT for use securing loads in interstate trucking

G7, aka G70: stronger than G63. 5/16" is approved by DOT for use as above.

G8, aka G80, aka crane chain: Very strong alloy chain, approved for overhead lifting in OSHA regulated environments.

G10, aka G100: as above, but stronger.

G120: recent development, as above, but stronger.

Stainless chain is mostly rated as ornamental or architectural chain & individual ratings vary with alloy. Pretty much any welded link stainless chain is going to be stronger than the line that you attach it to. Stainless is more prone to fatigue than other chains, but I've never seen a fatigue related failure in the field.

G4 comes from companies like Campbell. G80 & above come from companies like Crosby & CM.

5/16" G4 chain normally has a working load limit of 1,900lbs. 5/16" G7 has a WLL of 4700lbs. Break strength is well above WLL.

The alloy chains rust just as fast as the cheap grades do.

Any of the G series chains can be galvanized, but normally I only see G4 with that coating.

Re: Anchor Chain

i use ht because it fits my 2 gypsies....as the galvo is chunked off in these rocky anchorages anyway i see no real reason to be too picky , at this time, as
whatever i get has to be re-galvo'd after central america.....i inspect my chain each time i anchor and between anchorages, and during low season , when i am in marinas repairing ....

I think you mean WLL of 3900 lbs for 5/16 G4 chain.

Re: Anchor Chain

Laclede Chain Mfg. Co. LLC also makes Grade 4 short link hot galv. chain in the USA.
ACCO, American Chain and Cable Co. was bought by Peerless some years ago.

Re: Anchor Chain

There is no G4 chain at Home Depot. I don't know what the stuff they have is but it don't say G4 on each link. Some stores have G7 transport chain but it looks to have something like a chromic acid treatment instead of a Galvanized surface. Which ,would last about 2 days in salt water before going south.

G4 and "Proof Coil" are not the same critters. G4/G40 is also known as "High Test."

Proof coil is G30. It's not made for windlasses.

Are you familiar with the Laclede G4 chain and how it compares with Acco? Quality, price?

No, I've never seen a piece of Laclede chain. I've always used ACCO for galvanized chain. The Peerless / ACCO Boatman's Pride is their imported chain. I stick with their US made chain.
