3/8 Anchor Line
Anyone have any recommendations on where to pick up some 3/8 anchor line? I need about 250 ft of 3 strand and want to get some quality line, but the choices online have huge variability on pricing.

Re: 3/8 Anchor Line
Besides the vendors listed above, I've also used these guys: https://www.ropeinc.com/
3/8"??? I hope it's for a very small boat. Even if the strength is adequate, any chafe quickly kills small-diameter rode.

I picked up an FX-11 as a light duty stern hook. Something to just keep us pointed into waves correctly. I was going to match the FX-11's anchor kit which has 1/4 inch chain and 3/8 inch line. But I guess I could use 1/2

Re: 3/8 Anchor Line
Just buy a name brand like Samson or New England Rope. Look for terms like “pre-shrunk” or “set”. The line should feel firm not soft. It should resist unlaying.

You might find that Brait would be the most flexible and desireable line for that application. See (click on) Yale Brait.

I use 3/8” line and 3/16” PC for my main bower rode but it’s a 20’ boat.
If you are worried get 7/16”.

Re: 3/8 Anchor Line
1/2" is easier on hands.

Re: 3/8 Anchor Line
1/4” grade 30 Proof Coil minimum break strength 5200 pounds
3/8” nylon three strand minimum strength 3600 pounds
FX-11 Fortress Anchor maximum holding power 3600 pounds
I think I’d go up to 1/2” nylon.

Re: 3/8 Anchor Line
Knowing the size of the boat would help a lot. We don't have enough information to know anything about the load.
However, if he is using this as a stern anchor just for stability, it's not the same as a bow anchor. There are other factors:
- 250-feet of 1/2-inch line is bulky to store and impossible to hand coil. For that matter, 150-200 feet is about the most you can hold in one hand while coiling.
- I suspect he doesn't need quite 250 feet for a stern anchor. I guess that depends on where.
- 3/8-inch isn't too bad to hand haul with gloves. Climbing ropes are 9-10 mm double braid, which is about the same. They are somewhat stronger. Since it is a stern anchor, he shouldn't be hauling it under load. But he'll wish it was 1/2-inch when he does. Of course, there are always cockpit winches.
All that said, I up-sized the anchor line on my 24-foot tri to 1/2-inch simply because I like the feel in my hands, particularly when it blows. It will also last much longer. 1/2-inch is probably the right answer, but until you put your boat size in your signature, you place us at a disadvantage.
Mostly, I hate stern anchors. The wind always seems to change, making it worse. But that is a separate topic.

Re: 3/8 Anchor Line
Boat is a Tartan 37. 37 Ft sailboat. The FX-11 anchor is for an easy to deploy stern anchor. my primary is a 20kg Rocna anchor with 200 ft of chain with 150 ft of 5/8 line.
Sounds like I should use at least 1/2 inch based on everyone's recommendations

Re: 3/8 Anchor Line
felizcortez, if you have large hands, they will like the 1/2" better, but it they are small, you may be able to get by just fine with the 3/8", which will also store more tidily. Try the line in your hands, and make the decision based on how it feels. Imagine it wet. The larger diameter may or may not be enough better to justify the cost. It's okay for a stern line to be stretchy: there's only the cleat for it to chafe on.

Re: 3/8 Anchor Line
I ended up purchasing a 600 ft spool of of 1/2" 3 strand nylon. I'll cut off about 250 for the anchor and will have another 350 to play with for other projects on the boat. Thanks everyone for the help.
