Sure... As long as the only thing that powers it are oars or a bedsheet...

PS: WELCOME TO CF Harry!

Depends on where you are. Every country has their own rules.

If you're in or visiting Australia, every state is different and it gets real messy:

The U.S. Coast Guard website warns:
“Documentation of your vessel does not cover the vessel's tender or dinghy. These craft fall within the jurisdiction of the motorboat numbering laws of the state of principal use. Please contact your state agency that handles the registration or numbering of motorboats for further information”

Again another poster (welcome to CF) on a world-wide forum who poses a question that might have a different answer in every country.

No problem in the Bahamas, Harry. In Canada if the the motor is 10 hp or greater you'll have to license it and in the US you'll have every law enforcement agency in every State after you if you don't have it registered.

I am curious.... Outside the heavily policed areas of popular recreational waterways..... Has anyone ever experienced this being checked or enforced on a cruising yacht?

Yes, it is widely enforced all over Florida. Since my inflatable is registered with the state I have never been stopped, but I have seen others stopped and ticketed in somewhat out of the way places.

Re: Zodiac Registration yes or no

My experience is in the keys they only care if you have a life jacket and a light in a basic get to shore dinghy. If you have a flash inflatable with a big new 4 stroke you need to register it. I have used everything from 13' whalers and Avons with 50 horses to 7' zodiac with cruise and carrys in the keys. They don't bother the 7' guys.

On the west coast of FL they will bust your balls about it. A toss up on the east coast. other states? If you're clearly just passing thru and and not waterskiing behind it at the time, you're very unlikely to ever get a ticket.

A friend with an SSR registered yacht and really nice unregistered console Avon flew a British ensign and tooled all around Ft Lauderdale and told me he was never stopped. A British accent would help matters when stopped in this case.

Yes, several times. Both congested and very remote. Once they were looking to certificates of training (my daughter was driving and was young) and PFDs. Other times fishing permits. But they always noted the registration too.

I would also guess that without numbers on the side (very visible) I would be stopped more often.

Re: Zodiac Registration yes or no

I'm on the West Coast of Florida and in regards to those waters all the posters are right on. In fact, in Venice FL there is one guy who seems to do nothing else but check registration numbers and that they are correctly displayed.

On another note, we once had a dinghy stolen from our marina. It was right next to mine. His did not have a registration number, mine did. Significant? I don't know but they did steal my oars to steal his dink.

My current registration numbers were bought through boat number plates, I opted for a bright orange background with black letters. If someone steals the dink, it will stick out like a sore thumb.

Some folks also pint their outboard cowling orange, or pink, or lime, makes it much easier to find .

Was this enforced as heavily before 9/11?
