Yamaha 5hp Outboard Problem

I have a 5 hp Yamaha outboard and it keeps shutting down after running for a few minutes. Is there an impeller on the water cooling system? I have a maintenance manual and it si not shown.

If it has one, any idea where it is located?

Any other ideas?

Dave

The impellors are usually in the lower unit (Just above the prop) Please give a Model#. and perhaps we can help. If you do not know how they work you should seeka mechanic

when i've had that kind of problem it's always been the fuel system. might be a good place to start looking.

Also, check the water flow. I have a Yamaha 8HP which has a chronic but very insignificant flow problem...if you watch for it. When you start the engine, you should see a pretty strong "pee" stream from under the engine on the starboard side. If you don't see it, or if it's only a trickle, then use a small wire or other device (I use a thinned plastic wire tie) and stick it up in the little hole. There's a small metal tube extending just a bit below the bottom of the engine, behind the gear lever. That should start an immediate strong flow.

I check mine every time I start the engine, and it's amazing how often the flow needs some "help". FloMax for outboards????

I vote for fuel starvation problem. There is a vent cap on the tank that needs to be open while running. It could be clogged. There also might be a clogged pickup tube in the tank and if someone has run ethanol fuel through the engine and not let it run dry after each use there might be a lot of gummy residue somewhere in between the fuel in the tank and the engine.
If you have the option of borrowing a tank from someone try it to see if you get the same result. Remember the vent cap.
Good luck on your troubleshooting.

It turned out to be my impeller. Took it apart and nothing left. Replasced and it now runs. There is a very good YouTube video on changing an impeller on a 4hp, same as the 5. It is step by step.

Thanks

How did it manage to shut down from the impeller? If it overheated that much wouldn't it fry the motor? I think the impeller was another problem and in taking it out you fixed something else. Crap in the carb?
