You can find them used but in general even used they're pricey.

Make em'?

Sail Delmarva: Wind Vanes

Not fancy, but cheap. Used is scarce, as they generally are UV ruined or broken.

would love to hear some opinions on what you consider to be good value for money in a vane.

I have been looking for a while. Most 20 year old items are not much less than new. I decided on a Cape Horn model. $ 3000 with a 28000 mile warranty. Mine is being built to fit my boat. Good luck,

Re: windvanes? which ones and where!?

Hi Bdurham,

The Aries Aries is probably still the best (opinions will vary), the monitor http://www.selfsteer.com/products/monitor/index.php comes a very close second. The Hydrovane Self Steering Hydrovane Selfsteer is also very good.

We sail a heavy Schooner with an old (ish) "Lift Up Aries" and love it.

Second hand prices reflect the build quality and the market strenth. If in the USA I would talk to the guys at Scanmar, builders of the Monitor. If in Europe I would talk with either Aries (Now in Denmark, and non the worse for that) or with Hydrovane (Used to be in Nottingham UK now in Canada?).

Regards

Simes

You might wish to check out Voyager Windvanes. I haven't taken mine to sea yet, but so far, so good.
