Where do you keep the registration for the dink?

I had mine along with a few spare parts in a small Otterbox. I came back to a dinghy that was half underwater last night. Motor got trapped under a wall as the tide came back up. Anyway the box floated away, so I'm looking for other ideas. Maybe just screw the box right into the side of one of the benches?

It might be best not in the dink but on you instead. It would be better when someone steals it if they don't have the registration too. You might just have a bag you bring that has the lights, the registration the mini tools set and a PFD. There just are things you need to have in the dink to be USCG legal.

Make multiple double sided copies, laminate them at office supply, Kinkos, drug store or some chandeliers have small zip lock bags. Tack/staple them under the seat. If you use a zip lockbag, double bag and put a $20 for emergency gas concealed inside.

I have a key chain that has a sealed compartment that I keep my registration and a whistle. I have this attached to my kill switch lanyard. If I didn't I'ld never remember to bring either of them. West Marine sells one similar to mine for about $7. ORION Orion Safe at West Marine

If you do that in FL and are asked for it you can get nothing (verbal warning), a warning, or a ticket.

Laminating paper is O.K. as long as you have wide margin around the edge of the paper, and don't fold it.

You have to register the dinghy and the outboard motor separately.

I keep laminated copies inside a Zip[ock bag secured inside the outboard motor...

In the US the correct answer is "It depends". If you have a documented vessel, the dinghy is less than 10hp, and you use it for nothing but going back and forth between the boat and shore, you are not required to register the dinghy. If you use it for any other purpose or have a larger motor you must have a separate registration for the Dinghy. I often fish or dive from mine so I do have a separate registration, not to mention 15 hp.

In California you don't IF it isn't powered by motor or sails. Rowboats aren't registered here. Perhaps in your state if you chuck the outboard/sails, you won't need to have your dinghy registered.

OK, Pete, just noticed you're in the UK.

In California, whether your boat is US documented or State registered has no affect on the dinghy's state registration requirement.

Wrong CaptBill.............that may work in No. Carolina, but not in other states. A dink is considered a seperate vessel in most states, and will require registration IF the dink is powered by an outboard of any size, even if electrically propelled. Besides that, if the dink is registered, it may be easier to track down if stolen.

And that depends too.

I have heard of only one person that said he was going to use the "Tender To" argument. Have not heard back how it works out.

I have an 8hp on a 9'6" dink. I need it registered seprately. Florida.

No way am I going to try to talk the law when someone "with the gun" tells me I need to be registered when I am using the "Tender To" defence.

I'll just pay up and produce on demand.
