What is the life expectancy of a yamaha impeller?

I have a problem with my outboard engine and hope for some advice. I have a 5 HP Yamaha and every 1 &1/2 to 2 years the impeller breaks and I end up having to replace it. Haven't started changing it regularly before it breaks but I think I will put it on a schedule because it always breaks at the worst time and have to row to get back.
Anyone else have this problem with the impeller? Any way to extend the life? Is this a normal life expectancy of the impeller? Or just put up with it and change it before it breaks. Thanks Dave

My Yamaha outboard manual says "Repair/replace" water pump every 200hr or once per year.

Change the impeller before it breaks so you don't wind up with bits and pieces blocking water passages in the engine block.

Is your outboard being rinsed in fresh water after use at all (as in with the earmuffs or similar) or is it constantly in sale water / air?

Every marine engine, (small or large), I have known or heard of requires the water pump impeller to be changed anually.

Have owned 4 outboards from 5 to 25 HP and now a 90, number 5. Have never had to replace an impeller, all used in salt water, but washed after use.

Re: What is the life expectancy of a yamaha impeller?

Thanks, The engine is in salt water all year except for a few weeks if I go on the hard. We never rinse in fresh water after use. It gets used everyday. So, it looks like I will start to change once a year to be sure at least for this problem I don't have to row. I'll do it one of the times I have it on the beach cleaning barnicles off of the hull. Thanks for all of the input.

I suspect your are using it far more than most other folk hence the shorter life.

Sometimes a week.... other times 12 years... but usually somewhere in between..... I change mine every 2 years and have not had an issue yet. Much better to change it than to have it fail when you need it.

shouldbe changed every year.....longer and the fins become brittle and break, as you have found. is a routine maintenance thing on outboards. rinsing doesnt seem to make any difference in this part, from my experience.....

Re: What is the life expectancy of a yamaha impeller?

FWIW,

We too use our Y-15 every day and only rinse in fresh water when we go up a river somewhere! This motor is now 7 years old and still on its original impeller. I carry a spare around, and one of these days soon I'll change it... hopefully before it fails in an awkward place. OUr previous motor was a Suzuki 15, used similarly, and it's original impeller lasted 8 years and then crashed.

So your rate of failure seems high to me. There may be a difference in the water pump design in the smaller motors that reduces impeller life... who knows... but I guess that preemptive changes may be the best way to keep you out of trouble.

Cheers,
