Outboard for Avon Redseal

Hi ALL!

I have a 10' Avon Redseal dingy which I need an ouboard for. Mfg. recomendation is max 4hp. I was looking at 4, 4.5 and 5 hp until I read an article some where that said if you give the motor to much gas at the the start the Redseal has a tendancy to fold in the middle as the engine goes down at the stern. I'm wondering if I should really be looking a 3hp? I thought with a little larger engine we could get it to plane but it sounds like the Redseal is more of a displacement dingy. I do have the floorboards but am missing the stringers. Anyway, has anyone out there had experience with the Avon Redseal and might enlighten me as to what HP outboard I should buy for it?

Thanks for your help!

Tom

Re: Outboard for Avon Redseal

1) You will not get a Redseal to plane
2) There's no benefit to exceeding the manufacturer's horsepower rating, but there are risks like flooding the stern or flipping the dinghy over when lightly loaded.

Re: Outboard for Avon Redseal

You CAN get a Redseal to plane, rather easily infact. Ours does with a Johnson 5hp single cylinder 2 stroke on the back with two up but...you need to be switched on and careful. As for bending in the middle? Hmmm...never had a problem there...I might suggest a little more pressure. Ours has the floorboards and stringers fitted however.
