New spill proof CARB approved diesel 5 gallon container

Well ok, I just tried to add 5 gallons from my new spill proof and CARB approved 5 gallon diesel fuel tank to my main tank. I for one am truly amazed by the new fuel can nozzel designed by committee. What a lovely piece of &^^$$@. Pardon my symbolic french....

After first spilling fuel from the spill proof spout and then watching as little by little the fuel SLOOOOLY emptied into the funnel that I needed to use with the spill proof nozzle. After 10 seconds of that, I was so done.

Out came the rigging knife and now I no longer have a spill proof carb approved nozzle. It fills much faster and spills not at all now too ;-)

So two questions for the collective. First, Where can I get a small round disk, to seal the lid now. I'm trying to ponder what I have on board that I can cut in a circle to use to seal the cap with the hole in it. I may shred a pepsi can for the cause.

Second, are there any nozzles available somewhere that are not spill proof and CARB "California Air Resources Board" approved that I can purchase.

I'm sure that the CARB nozzel works fine in cars. But it does not work at all for boats it seems. Or maybe its just blondes it does not work well with.

Sorry, I can't tell you where to find a proper cap for your tank, but I would suggest that you look at a ""Wonder Pump". They are simple siphon hoses with a check valve at one end. You stick the valve end in the tank and jiggle it up anddown a couple of times and the siphon starts. They cost about $7. I got mine at Lowes and wouldn't be without it. I never spill any fuel and don't have to fight those "spill proof" nozzles.

CARB approved nozzle + band saw = functional nozzle.

I used a clamp to secure the nozzle in the open position and cut off the end which released the spring and turnined it into a normal one. Now I don't spill diesel all over the planet.

You know, I found several at my local Autozone parts store that had the older(?) no-spill style nozzle. This was about 7 months ago. Of course I had just bought one of the "push-down" no spill nozzles from a hardware store, but fortunately I hadn't filled it up yet and could return it.

You can find a few aftermarket alternative spouts and caps on EBay.

Have used heavy duty cloth backed rubber (about an 1/8" thick)from work when I made access panel in fuel tank. Took 2 pieces and placed them rubber side out. Still going strong after 5 years. Easy to cut to size. Happy to mail few pieces if you think makes sense. (pm address). Also I feel safe from angry blond with knife if it does not work out as we are based on east coast!

Arrgh!!! When those POSs first came out here in California, Chuch Hawley of West Marine did a study that showed exactly what you've found: they don't f-ing work. Of course, he couldn't convince the powers that be that it was a farce. Super Siphon is great, but kinda slow, we do have one. i also kept our 3 gallon OLD style and treat it like gold! Crazy, crazy, crazy.

I had trouble refueling from jerry cans especially while underway. Our fuel inlet is on the outer edge of cockpit where the transom meets the deck. The only way to fill is from the swim platform, hanging on to the stern rail with 1 hand while trying to hold the jerry can with the other. Not fun, and not safe.

I solved this problem by stealing an idea from a fellow cruiser (thanks, Ian!). I attached a standard 12V diesel fuel pump with a Racor on an old cutting board. Add some fuel hose and a couple hose clamps, and I can now refuel from the comfort of my cockpit. No spills, no safety issue, and I am filtering at 2 microns so there is clean fuel going into the tank. Priceless.

These were on clearance at my local West Marine and I bought for at the time.... So much better than the push type!

Speaking of fueling problems.... I bought a west marine fuel/water funnel and can't figure out why they put the filter part so high in the stem. When I fill the funnel, the fuel empties into the tank except for the last few ounces.... I then just have to dump it back into the jerry can from the funnel. Had the filter been mounted lower in the funnel, it would have poured all into the tank.
