Merc Mariner 15M tiller cable mess...

I got a good deal on a 2003 15 horse two stroke merc. Previous owner sold it in the midst of replacing the tiller cables. I've been trying to get these cables installed and the shifter working for hours now.

Anyone else do this? Is it really this complicated? I'm beginning to wonder if the cable housings are a little too long.

Canonic, they are a little tricky. I've done it twice and the hardest parts are not reversing them and getting the adjustments centered. We've been using ours every day for 8 yrs and it's been great. Starts first pull. Now looking for new as it's getting old. 2005. Want another one?

There is also a clip part that can break off and not contain the cable housing - causing the throttle/shift to not work correctly. Make sure the clip part is still there (I'm going from memory and can't describe it better, but a schematic should show it).

I bought a new one of those. I'm trying to install the two new cables the previous owner bought. The outside casings seem to be just maybe 5-10 mm too long. I can trim them easily with a Dremel or wire cutters but I hate to start cutting on a factory part.
