Jabsco Macerator Pump Chopper Removal

Anyone know how to remove the chopper on what appears to be an older model of the Jabsco 18590?

Here's a pic of mine and the drawing of the seemingly new one, it just has a nut (#3)

As I recall it just unscrews. I think the shaft extends past the other end of the motor and it has a slot in it. Use a screw driver to prevent the shaft from turning while you unscrew the chopper.

If I'm wrong about the slot in the shaft, there is another way to hold the shaft and I can't remember it. I do remember it's a PITA.

Thanks for the reply...
The new ones have the slot and exposed shaft under removable cap (saw a video on YouTube). Mine doesn't have that, I even took off the back plate and looked inside the motor and saw nothing.

I sent jabsco an email, so maybe they get back to me.

Call Jabsco, you might get lucky.

I once called about my macerator and the woman who answered had the slowest, heaviest W. Va. drawl I'd ever heard. She also knew what she was talking about, and answered my question explicitly.

The advise to call Jabsco is good. Their customer support is good.
Is there a flat spot on the shaft behind the chopper? I remember making a wrench out of thin metal. But it was a long time ago. Sorry I can't be more specific.

I think there might be a flat spot behind the chopper, it's just really hard to tell and too small for a standard wrench, but maybe that's it.

If you can get the motor housing off (2 bolts on aft motor plate an 2 under the mounting bracket) you can probably hold the armature with a strap wrench. Soak maceration blades in penetrating oil first!

Definitely a flat side on the shaft behind the chopper, but only one flat side. A standard wrench does fit under, but won't grab since there is only one flat side. 8mm is too big and 7mm is too small. I think the 7mm would work if there were two flat sides.

My memory also was that it unscrewed.

Any ideas of what to hold it with? (Anyone?)

Here is a better picture showing the shaft and flat edge.

I might not even be able to find the impeller or service kit here in Fiji (port Denarau), but I'd rather not replace the whole pump, because the motor runs well.

Re: Jabsco Macerator Pump Chopper Removal

If there is a flat spot on the shaft you need to make a tool out of some plate steel. Cant tell from pic if flat spot exists. Another way I have dealt with these types, if you have a flat spot, is a creative clamping of the pump in a vise with a piece of plate against the flat spot. You will scratch your head for a bit till you find a combo that works.

They have a similar TMC pump here in Fiji (usd$170) so I'm just going to replace the whole unit. It's about half the price of the jabsco one.

Same fittings, just used the custom mounting plate from the old pump.
