I Hate my Outboard

I hate my outboard and I'm pretty positive that it hates me!!!!

I give it more attention than any other single item on the boat! Yet it still treats me like crap and can only be counted on about 25% of the time.

I would assign it a gender in keeping with its' nature. But even a bit*h probably is good more than 25% of the time!

Re: I Hate my Outboard

Would be really helpful to specify the model/make of said awful outboard.

Get rid of it and try another. Life is too short.

I have had great luck with outboards my whole life. My current one is a rather scruffy-looking 12-year old 25 horsepower Mariner. Runs like a top. Never once failed to start in 3 years of my ownership. I never flush it and rarely do any kind of service on it. Things break on my boat on an almost daily basis, but thank God the outboard, so far, has not been one of them.

Why as it doesn't change our personal relationship with each other! I still hate it and it still hates me!

Well if you want to be boorish about it.... Because people have great interest in how products are performing in the real world since they might be considering the same purchase.

Ok, I will play along...

... I guess it is a 4 stroke, and that it has one cylinder.

How did I do?

There's your problem. Get a twin for twice the aggravation.

What Steinbeck wrote about his "Hansen Sea-Cow" in The Log from the Sea of Cortez:

"Our Hansen Sea-Cow was not only a living thing but a mean, irritable, contemptible, vengeful, mischievous, hateful living thing. In the six weeks of our association we observed it, at first mechanically and then, as its living reactions became more and more apparent, psychologically. And we determined one thing to our satisfaction. When and if these ghoulish little motors learn to reproduce themselves the human species is doomed."

Just what is the point of your post? Are you trying to warn others? If so, Target9000 was justified in asking make and model.

It this is just a rant, I'll happily unsubscribe from the thread.

Re: I Hate my Outboard

Can we talk about why we hate our outboards? I have a Nissan (Tohatsu) 5 HP 2 stroke which gave me no end of problems for years. I can't tell you how often I took apart the carb. It has developed a modicum of reliability since I replaced two of its three coils. It still has it's foibles. Starting involves using full choke and a couple of pulls which usually results in a spark of life. Then it's choke off and a little more throttle and two more pulls before it starts. Deviation from this routine usually results in flooding which may be addressed by turning off the fuel valve and pulling vigorously until it coughs again.

Of course all this may just be a built in theft protection system.
