Hypalon Adhesive Solvent?

I need to clean up some Bostik Inflatable Boat Adhesive (polychloroprene adhesive) from my Achilles hypalon boat. Any idea what generic solvent to use? West Marine doesn't carry the Bostik M 501 Cleaner/Thinner that the label recommends.

Re: Hypalon Adhesive Solvent?

I believe that toluene will do the job. Worked ok on the adhesive used in the old Hypalon Zodiac I had some years ogo.

Jim
I have a can of it about 20 miles away from me right now. Unfortunately, I have spent several hours shopping for it in Alameda, only to find it apparently is unavailable in California anymore.

Re: Hypalon Adhesive Solvent?

I called the glue people and they said Xylene is a replacement for Toluene

Re: Hypalon Adhesive Solvent?

I ended up using "Goo Gone" and a lot of elbow grease. Hopefully I haven't ruined the material I used it on.

Re: Hypalon Adhesive Solvent?

FWIW, I have found Xylene is not as aggressive as Toluene. I concur with Jim as I have used Toluene on a couple of hypalon glues with good success. In fact, I have found toluene the most aggressive of all the common solvents but I am not surprised to hear that it is unavailable in California.

Given it's reported health risks, I remain surprised that it available retail anywhere these days but it is!

It is one solvent I try to avoid and treat it with great caution, supposedly it penetrates the skin like water through a mosquito net!

Anyway, hope you find something that works.
