so you anchor only in flat water anchorages, then.....
there is a difference.

try motoring fast in a 3 ft chop in an 8 ft dink.
then try it in a 10 ft dink.
and donot forget the inevitable cruisers favorite--the heavy r i b.
btdt with all of em.
driest was r i b
wetest was an 8 ft hard dink with a 3.5 hp engine. was fun but not good for work or trying to present in a slightly orderly fashion once on shore.
have fun.

We've got an 8' Walker Bay RID with a hypalon tube. It feels very stable with two adults and minimal gear, in the flat waters of the San Juan Islands. If it gets choppy you may get wet, slow down, and feel less stable. It zooms right along with a 2hp Yamaha 2-stroke, (22#), with 2 large adults, in flat water. With 1 adult, (250#), it is stable and quick enough. No GPS speeds though. I think a 10' would be better, but everything is heavier.

Re: How fast does a hard dinghy motor?

I have a 10' rib with a 9.9 two stroke
By myself it will do 22 knots.
With four people I go slow so we stay dry.

Re: How fast does a hard dinghy motor?

A 9ft displacement dinghy travels at 3 to 4 knots in flat water. Engines 2.5 max 4 hp.

Re: How fast does a hard dinghy motor?

This is Bill, the Original Poster of this thread. We did buy the hard dinghy, a Trinka 8. We've had it just a month and so far think it's great! The answer to my original question is. ..is motors at 4.4 knots in flat water with the 3.5hp. As noted by some, it will not plane, and probably uses only half ghe throttle of the motor, after that it's just pushing a wake and not going any faster.

We love the boat. We very rarely need to go more than a mile, so the speed is not a big issue. It is nice to sit inside, rather than on dinghy tubes.

It rows like a dream, great fun and you meet more people rowing.

The sailing rig is great fun. When we're anchored in one place on the big boat I now can go sailing. Which was where this all started years ago- sailing.

It is tippier than the inflatable, but you get used to it.

Getting back in after snorkeling is not a problem, even alone. I can come back in over the stern witj no water coming in the boat.

Lots of compliments - I think some folks are jealous of the fun we're having with the Trinka...

Trinkas are simply beautiful boats.
