Re: Horrible "non spill" gas cans

You can still buy the original design "Jerry can", it is now the NATO fuel can, it can be had with an excellent spout, http://www.amazon.com/Atlantic-Briti...WX51VF4ZGEK5BA

I have a German Army small air cooled Diesel generator that uses these cans

You need 3 hands to pour them, they pour at a ridiculously slow rate, and they leak something horrible which kind of defeats the whole purpose to them.

So does anyone know where to buy or order a tradional style old school plastic gas can?
One of the old metal ones with the metal flexible goose neck would be great. I believe they where band 40 yrs. ago. Another case of something the Gov. should have kept their nose out of.

The problem is the design of the spout all together. I just want the original bendy tube like they used to have.

Re: Horrible "non spill" gas cans

BEWARE!!! Topping off my sailboat last fall the sliding part of the nozzle type we are discussing broke and half the nozzle slide down into the tank. It would be a prolonged engine then tank removal ordeal to fish it out.

Now my paranoia is during rough weather the plastic parts will find a way to plug the tank line while entering a port of refuge.

I have raged against the C students who designed and mandated these for big brother. I only need to get 20 more good years and I am worried about making it.

It's only mid October but we had a frost last night and I'd really enjoy having a longer sailing season here in Maine, so I'm trying to do my part to promote global warming.

Re: Horrible "non spill" gas cans

I'm not sure where in Canada someone has found the old type, but here in Alberta, NO WAY. We only have the stupid new type..

I hate them, I hate them sooooooooooo much...

A jiggle siphon hose has been my solution! Of course it only works if you can get the can higher than the fill location.

Yes, I have, for racing. Neat thing about those nossels is they are just plumbing parts and hose that can be had at most hardware stores if you need to fix them.

I think they would work great on a boat.

Re: Horrible "non spill" gas cans

You are spot on. Try flea markets, yard sales, and maybe Canada for operable portable fuel containers. The only way to use these types is to break and remove the inner valve, cut off the plastic screw latch, and/or remove the cap system completely, then use them with a large funnel. Of course, they still don't have a vent valve to help manage the flow. You will probably still spill some fuel, but less. Using them underway will liven your vocabulary.

This was to be expected after the 1 Gal non-flush toilet and other "Green" mandates by politicians who don't live real lives. I was kind of hoping the rest of the world would not follow this idiocy.

They did. Just threw them out, it beat the **** out those leaking neck beasts. I think you mentioned the jerry cans. At least their narrower design make them manageable. Are the ones you mentioned aluminum?

Re: Horrible "non spill" gas cans

Yeah, I was amazed last time in Florida I couldnt find a normal gas can.... and those things are a P.O.S. I thought it was just some states....? Right now I'm cherishing all my old cans and better start taking better care of them! I see the old cans at yard sales all the time. Guess I'll start hoarding them...

Re: Horrible "non spill" gas cans

My newer CSA gas cans look like this:

It vents through the same hose, which I guess is to the new standard?

Not the fastest pour in the world, but I've had no problems with leaks or spilling. Key feature for me is the flexy spout - much easier to position than rigid ones.
