Honda 2 HP

I have a guy on the dock that has one for sale, appears to have never been run, I have no idea of year of manufacture.
It a 2 HP, not a 2.3, he bought it and a WM dinghy from a third party and he wants a bigger motor.
I have no idea about these little things and am wondering if the 2HP and then 2.3 are the same, if ones is better than the other and finally what are these things worth?

Re: Honda 2 HP

Seems I've heard a lot of complaints about the small Hondas, but not sure which is which.

Re: Honda 2 HP

He's asking $500, I was thinking it would be a good back up motor to have and my experience with Honda is everything I have had that was made by Honda often wasn't the highest performance maybe, but nearly bullet proof, usually you just can't kill a Honda.
But the air cooling and the centrifugal clutch seem Mickey Mouse.
Wondering if I should offer $400 or is $500 a steal, or stay away and buy somebody's water cooled little motor, maybe that has a real gearbox?

Re: Honda 2 HP

We have owned 3 of the Honda 2hp motors. I really like them and have never had a problem with them. If it's the older 2hp that's water cooled it should be very quiet, the newer air cooled models not so. I would say if it's never been run and in good shape $500 is a good deal.

I have a Honda 2hp, the clutch does take a little getting used to. The upside to air cooling is you don't need to flush the motor. The downside is that it is loud. It is nice and light weight. My only advice if you get it is to make sure you run the fuel out of it when you are done and drain the little remaining fuel from the carb.

Honda 2hp, the world s loudest small OB. I could always tell when my neighbor in the anchorage with one was coming or going - from a long way off.

Re: Honda 2 HP

air cooled is great - less to go wrong.
Mine has been trouble free, but only 2 years old.
Lots of stories of the carb getting gunked when it sits, so make sure to run it dry if you won't be using it tomorrow. $500 seems a bit much - I think I paid $700 for mine new.

Re: Honda 2 HP

I had one. It failed me once too often and I gave it away as that's how much I thought it was worth. It was LOUD!

Re: Honda 2 HP

Both the 2HP and the 2.3 engines are aircooled. I have no experience with the newer 2.3 HP model. Yes, they are quite loud.
I never drained the fuel out out of the carby, never had reason to do so. Although I always stored the engine upright.

I like the centrifugal clutch, I like the (light) weight of approx. 12 kg/27 lbs, I liked the minimal maintenance required: no fresh water flushing, no impeller. The only extra thing to do is (for me) yearly oil change.

My only gripe would be that many bolts and screws are not of the SS variety, even the inside of the fuelcap will become rusty.
As far as price in your part of the world, cannot comment. Here in Oz decent 2nd hand units sell for $500-$800 (Oz $), that is mainly for the 2HP model, have not seen too many 2.3 HP engines 2nd hand.

There is a current CF thread here with more info:

Honda 2 HP

I offered him $400, he's trying to get $500, which is fine, it would only be a back up motor for me anyhow, figured if I could get it cheap enough I'd go for it.
Seems they can be had new in the 900's
