Buying a new 5 HP engine

I am looking at buying a new 5HP outboard engine. I have had a Yamaha and I might not be able to repair it this time. Any comments on the following engines. The prices are close and all can be serviced locally. These are the only ones I can buy on the island.

Nissan 5 HP 2 Stroke NI10005, Island Water World
Toshiba 5HP 2 Stroke TOH/M005BDS, Budget Marine
Yamaha 5HP 2 Stroke 5CSMHS, Local dealer, McIntyre Bros. LTD

Thanks, Aloisius

Re: Buying a new 5 HP engine

If we could buy 2 stroke outboards in the USA, I wouldn't have a 2 HP 4 stroke motor for my dinghy.

Everything you listed is a name brand and all are probably about the same. Get a feel for the dealer and service facility, then pick one.

Did you mean Tohatsu, not Toshiba?

Our 5hp Tohatsu has been great... mind you, we haven't used it much. When I was doing my research, I read good things about them.

Nissan and Tohatsu and Merc the same motor. Yamaha is a slightly better motor, but parts for the Tohatsu are less in most areas.

Re: Buying a new 5 HP engine

since you already have a 2 stroke yamaha i think i'd get that one. probably many of the parts are interchangeable so you have a ready made spare parts inventory. i'm still using my 3hp 2stroke yammy from the 90's.

we can no longer buy small 2 strokes in the usa. i'm thinking of getting a new one next time i'm in the bahamas, where they're still available.

Bought the 5 HP Yamaha. Also got the one back from the dealer so that I can fix it and use as a backup. They are identical engines, the new one is only cleaner the the other.
