Aries windvane missing pin bearings

Hello,
I finally have my Aries standard gear mounted. Before mounting, I took apart the lower portion, cleaned and reassembled it. The upper part (vane holder) is just a bit stiff so I took it apart as well and discovered there are no pin bearings in it. Someone must've removed or lost them ( I bought the vane used a few months ago.)
I'm looking into ordering a complete set of pins from Helen Franklin. I got to thinking that the pins may be easy to fabricate by cutting a very small stainless rod into short sections. Has anyone done this? What size/guage? Thanks!
