Any great back-up/second tender options?
Hi folks,
Wondering if anyone has some good recommendations for a tender solution that could be considered a backup for a RIB hanging on the davits. Something for when family is in town, or when worried about tying up the nice RIB + $$$ outboard on shore.
Key things:
- Ideally lightweight to not weigh down the mothership more than needed
- Low cost
- Motorized
- 2-3 capacity
- Rugid / tropics suitable
Cheers all

Maybe something like a porta-bote? https://www.porta-bote.com/

Sounds like you are describing a roll-up inflatable with a 2hp motor. Our back up is a tandem kayak which is also our primary when making beach landings in surf. Our back up to the back up is a couple of SUPS.

Re: Any great back-up/second tender options?
There are plenty of rigid dinks which fit that description, which come in at under 100lbs, & don't cost overly much to build. And that short of being crushed by a large vessel are pretty much immortal, given their ease of repair. Though the suggestions made by others also fit the bill.
Honesty, I can't imagine being onboard a boat with more than a crew of 2 without a spare dink. They're just too many times when it's closer to a necessity than a "want".

2-3 hp outboard and a sub-2.8m roll-up (no keel) or air floor boat (w/ keel).

Re: Any great back-up/second tender options?
I have thought about this as well and really love the 9.4 water tender from West Marine for this use. I had one a few boats back and let it go with the big boat but I'm considering it as a 2nd dinghy as it could be rowed easy and handles up to a 5 hp

Our backup plan is a two person kayak (easy to deploy from the deck) with a battery-powered trolling motor. Surprisingly quick and nimble and will easily get us to shore for dinner or sightseeing.

Avon Redcrest with a set of oars.
Lose the floor, not needed.

Lightest little dink I've found that meets your description is an 8' Walker Bay with the inflated collar option. It's non-planing, will take a small outboard, and with the collar will carry a lot.

I got one of the last "Made in France" roll-up Zodiac Wave dinghies with slat floor at about 40% off because it is discontinued. I've got a 2.5 hp outboard for it. Defender might still have a few; it's cheap and adequate as a spare.

Re: Any great back-up/second tender options?
It doesn't sound like it will get a lot of use. I'd go for a cheap pvc inflatable with an air floor. Store it rolled up and inflate it when needed.
These guys sell the type of boat I'm talking about.

U can't beat ports-bote. Indestructible, no patching, collapses and storable on your life lines, can take tropical sun forever...
Where u the Outremmer people I met in Napa Marina repair yard in early June? I have the Sharpie that was upside down doing bottom ?
ports-bote tracks better and more easily driven than a rubber boat. Not cheap though.

Re: Any great back-up/second tender options?
I am quite enjoying my DinghyGo, the inflatable sailboat website
68 lbs, inflatable floor, lifting rings for the davits, plus the most fun of all: comes with a sailing rig. You can get a cover for it. Works great with my Torqeedo 1003 electric engine, and easily manhandled (pace, men) by me, a 60 yo female. Read the manual, not meant for constant exposure to the sun, hence the cover. Made of Valtrex, iirc.

Re: Any great back-up/second tender options?
Mikereed mentioned SUPs as a great backup for the backup..we're on a smaller boat so the SUPs are are straight backup. We just bought a second for the boat. One is a Starboard windSUP and the other a Red Paddle Explorer..both high quality inflatables that roll up and store into large backpacks. Great fair wx dinghies.
