Re: AB 10 UL Aluminum RIB?

I just purchased a 9 UL to replace my 9.5 AL. I'll have it in the water in a few days and I'll let you know.

Re: AB 10 UL Aluminum RIB?

Getting delivery of our new 9VL in a week or so. All we've heard about AB is positive. We almost went with a similar Achilles model but decided on the AB in the end.

Re: AB 10 UL Aluminum RIB?

The 9' UL it much lighter and gives me more room on the foredeck. The tubes however are slightly smaller so it is not quite as dry as the 9.5 AL...it's only an issue in high winds with quartering seas. I like the bare aluminum, the paint was chipping off the AL. Not quite as much room so I removed the seat. Planes and is VERY fast with an 8HP (the engine is heavier than the RIB) I should have gone with a lighter 6HP.

Re: AB 10 UL Aluminum RIB?

We have a AB 10' ultra light un painted RIB. Now into the 5th season of full time use. Been excellent so far. We bought it because of its much lighter than others of the same size. Plus being unpainted we don't have to worry about the paint failing. Believe me the paint will fail in time. Previous to this we had a Avon 10' Rollup.

The only negative is the crappy method of inserting the oar pins into the holes. Totally worthless. Luckily we have not had to row. Our Avon rowed 100 times better than the AB. All due to better oar locks

We would buy another one

Re: AB 10 UL Aluminum RIB?

I am designing and building a plywood bow seat for my AB 10.5. I did the cardboard version mockup and its at a boat shop now for fabrication. it will allow storage of a fuel tank forward, a nice seat for fishing and a nice step down for getting into the dinghy from the bow.

Please share a few photos when completed.

We remade the seat after it broke making a surf landing in Mexico. We had Aluminum pieces that slide into the straps that hold the normal seat and attach to an old fiberglass plank. It lowered the seat about 6-7 inches and feel it's safer than sitting on the seat at level with the top of the tubes.

Good Luck

Chuck

Hi there, does the unpainted aluminum get hot when it's in the water and in the sun? Thanks. Jim

Picked up a Highfield 9'8" aluminum RIB two days ago. Might be a few days before I get to try it out.
