9.8 hp Outboard, extreme price difference

Shopping for an Outboard motor i found extreme price differences, for example an electric start Tohatsu 9.8 hp, shaft 15"

Defender.com MFS9.8A3EFS US $ 2.269,00

Same engine;

Marine Store MFS9.8A3EFS US $ 1.100,00

That's a 50% price difference, why.

If that "Marine Store" is the one in Hong Kong... they may or may not deliver a warantied product to wherever you are. They may or may not deliver a product at all...

do let us know how it works out. As a former Tohatsu dealer, I can tell you there is no way to sell a new motor for that price.

is boatsmarinemall.com a fake site ? | trust rating for boatsmarinemall.com | is boatsmarinemall.com safe to use | is boatsmarinemall.com legit | is boatsmarinemall safe

I would stay away. The web site is based in Russia. The company only accepts bank transfers for payment.

We bought ours a couple of years ago, at this time of year, from a local Academy store. Mercury 9.9, $1350 out the door. I convinced them it wouldn't sell until spring, and then it would be an old model.

Re: 9.8 hp Outboard, extreme price difference

Bought my Tohatsu 6 (4 stroke) from boats.net and their price was the best i found.

the motor is terrible though, and after spending almost $1500 for it I bought a used Yamaha 2 stoke to replace it with. The single cly 4 stroke Nissan, Mercury, Tohatsu (all the exact same motor) vibrate and are much louder then the 8hp and above and are not well made IMHO.

Re: 9.8 hp Outboard, extreme price difference

I bought a Mercury 8 (2 stroke) recently (the tweaked up 6hp model). Very happy with it. Haven't done a lot of hours, perhaps 20, but it starts second pull every time when cold, first pull when warm and does everything I ask of it so can't complain at all. It's not excessively noisy but that being said, probably noisier than a 4 stroke model.

Be careful though.... the Mercury 8 for example can be purchased for the same price as a Mercury 15hp... sounds strange, however the dearer ones are made in Japan and have the gear selector on the side, where-as the cheaper ones are made in the US and have the gear lever either on the control handle or alternatively change when you twist the control. As for whether the US made ones are bad.... no idea, but my dealer said he would never sell them.

Mercury are supposedly the same as the Tohatsu's / Nissans, however mine is internally nothing like it. I suspect that is only true for the US models. I'd love to know the full relationship between them all though.

FWIW, I'm not aware of any small horsepower 2-stroke outboards available new in the U.S.

Re: 9.8 hp Outboard, extreme price difference

If it is around a 26 kg motor it is a Tohatsu. The 15 is around 35kg and may well still be made in the US or Mexico by Merc although no longer available for purchase here. Brunswick is the largest marine company in the world so anyone's guess where the stuff comes from, but most goes thru the warehouse in Wisconsin at some point.

Re: 9.8 hp Outboard, extreme price difference

We have a 9.8 four stroke short shaft Tohatsu here in Victoria, BC and are trying to sell her for $1,000 with no takers? It is the quietest motor we have ever heard, so for those of you who say the Tohatsu is noisy, we do not understand that. Ours is a short shaft, and we have her on an Aero 11 Hunt and Fish inflatable at the moment.
