5 hp Yamaha outboard stalls at idle

I have a 2013 or 14 5hp Yamaha outboard. It was running fine, no problems. Last week a lot of rain, dinghy got full and the gas tank flipped over getting water in it. Someone righted the tank so I did not know. Started the engine, it ran for a bit then stopped. I realized what happened so took the engine home.
I took off the carberator but was able to leave th file line and throttle wire attached. Emptied the bowl and pulled the 2 jets. Cleaned everything with carb spray and put back together. Put a new plug in and cleared the fuel line of fuel up past the filter to the carb. Got new gas.
Starte the engine, it started onto second pull and runs well except for idle, it stops.

Took the engine back home repeated cleaning the carb and all fuel line and needle, jets, everything. Jets are clean, all of the holes are clear. Put the engine back on the dinghy, starts on second pull. Still will not idle, it stops. I ran the dinghy for over 2 miles and at full throttle it runs smooth. Go to idle, it stops.

Anyone know How can I get a manual for setting the carberator?

Any suggestions? Thanks. s/v Aloisius. Dave

Re: 5 hp Yamaha outboard stalls at idle

if you removed the idle screw and spring you need to reset it.

screw it fully in,then unscrew it about 1 1/2 -2 turns, fine tune with engine running.

the idle screw is the one that is tapped into the body of the carb, not the one on the throttle cable control

Re: 5 hp Yamaha outboard stalls at idle

I believe on the 5 hp Yamaha, the jets are one inside the other. Not sure which is which though. You unscrew the larger one, then take a thin screwdriver and withdrawal the set that is inside the tube that you just took the other jet out of. The first jet is short, the one inside is Linder, at least twice. I cleaned these with carb cleaner then screwed back in. In the past, they were screwed all the way until they seat. The long one first, then the short one. I don't believe either one is backed out 1 1/2 turns, although this might be my problem.

I touched no other adjusting screws that I am aware of.

Do you have a Yamaha 5 or have you worked on one? Very frustrating. Thank you

Re: 5 hp Yamaha outboard stalls at idle

I did not unscrew a idle screw with a spring attached. Maybe as you suggest that is now out of correct setting. Screw in then out 1 1/2 turns? Just retread your post.

Isn't this the mixture screw?

Yes it is -

Normally 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 turds out and adjust when running.

Check your HT lead - may be breaking down / shorting - that will cause your problem as well.

Re: 5 hp Yamaha outboard stalls at idle

Idle screw, mixture screw, all are the same. I believe in most newer engines the screw is covered by a cap that has to be removed if you want to adjust it. Only adjust idle and right off idle mixture though.
Since you have an idle problem I bet the idle jet and or circuit still is clogged. Become acquainted with it as I doubt this is the last time you will be cleaning the carb, small motor idle circuits are very tiny and very easily clogged

High Tension Lead, sometimes called the spark plug wire

Re: 5 hp Yamaha outboard stalls at idle

Thank you, Seeing that the engine runs smoothly when not at idle, could that still be a potential problem?

yes I have the 2 stroke yammy 5 hp,the jets are inside the float chamber, the mixture/idle screw is just below the throttle control assembly,on the outside of the carb body.
best to take it out, clean the hole then reset to 1 1/2 turns.

I am assuming yours is a 2 stroke,and not a 4 stroke,
the 4 stroke, I am not familiar with

Re: 5 hp Yamaha outboard stalls at idle

If the smaller (low speed or idle) jet is gummed up, carb cleaner will not clear it sufficiently, even when soaked.

Replace the jets or mechanically clean them.

Find a friend who plays guitar, or go to a music store and ask them for a used set of guitar strings they are going to throw away. Snip the end of the string with the ball leaving a couple inches of wire attached. You now have a graduated set of carb jet augers. Even if you have to buy a cheap set they're under 10 bucks.

Start with carb cleaner and the smallest wire until it works free, then work your way up to the largest that will fit and the jets will be shiny and clear.

I think you can get a whole new carb for the 5hp for under 250, sometimes it is worth it as opposed to the time involved. Of course, most of us cruisers have plenty of time.

Adjust the idle speed set screw.

Re: 5 hp Yamaha outboard stalls at idle

thank you atoll. I will pull the screw out clean and replace. First I will count the turns to set the screw before taking off then unscrew and clean.

The engine is only a little over a year old. I bought it new. The jets are very clean and have no build up or gas tarnish on them at all.

I will try to get to the dinghy this afternoon and solve the problem. I will post the results.

Thanks to all.
