2010 Hunter Passage 50 Auto Pilot issue

Buddy of mine has a 2010 Hunter 50 Passage with auto pilot. The auto pilot in heavy conditions makes a "clicking" noise in the pedestal area.

We opened the pedestal and there is a Lewmar motor mounted there that appears to drive the auto pilot.

Has anyone else encountered this issue or does anyone have an idea of what may be going on? Trying to troubleshoot the issue before it becomes a major problem.

My ap is similar and drive motor used to "beep". The problem wasn't the drive motor, it was computer unit.

Since you saying it only does it under heavy seas I would check to see the capacity of the unit as it could be at the max of its rating. Also check/clean all electrical connections and check the wire sizing to be sure you aren't getting too much voltage drop that only becomes a problem at high loading.

And of course it could poor sail trim!
