He said he has a 15hp on his dink. I have a 15 Merc 2 stroke that weighs 74 lbs.

"Pushing" a dinghy that is designed to plane doesn't make much sense. I have 15hp for a reason; I have a two stroke because of weight. If I wanted a 5hp to putter around with that's what I would have procured.

Re: 2 strokes illegal in US????

The new emission laws have limited the sale of 2 stroke outboards in the US.

Looks like you're getting a bit too caught up in the word "push."

I'm thinking the dinghy might go a bit faster with a 5 hp 4 stroke than my 6600 sailboat.

The 5 hp 4 stroke is almost 20 lbs lighter than your old 2 stroke and works great on a dinghy

A quick check on youtube.

Yes!

After his post, I was thinking about a boat I bought in 1980. It was an old 16' Whirlwind with a late 60's model 40 hp Johnson Outboard on it in excellent condition

The owner owned a Gas Station. You know the type with a couple bays for working on cars that didn't sell groceries etc

Anyway, if you opened the cover to the emergency pull start rope, it had the directions which said to mix a quart of 30 weight to six gallons of gas

I did that once and couldn't believe the crap left in the water......

My god, is it not obvious? It hangs from the dinghy davits during a Northwest passage.... Great 'emergency' tool in case you are stuck in ice.

I am thinking of investing in one myself..... But then again... With Global Warming there may be no ice soon...

(Disclaimer: in case some of you thought my post was serious it was purely in jest.)

Well, if you are going to bring up Franklin and Erebus, then one must also mention Crozier and Terror....

In the untracked wilds of Northern Europe. I keep it at my lake house. It's a mountain-type sled with a long track and deep lugs for use in the wilderness. It will go up almost vertical hills, over open (unfrozen) water, just about anywhere -- it's a true all terrain vehicle. It will "plane" in deep snow (just don't slow down! ). It has huge suspension travel so you can jump it over remarkable distances. It only weighs 180kg, so power to weight ratio almost like a F1 car. It's a total blast, although I haven't ridden it much the last few years as I'm usually on the boat during the winter.

Re: 2 strokes illegal in US????

the big advantage of a small 2 stroke to me is that they usually have 2 cylinders rather than 1 on smaller 4 strokes, which gives them a lot more balls. I have a 95 4 hp evinrude that still runs well

How fast do you have to go to get it to skim on the water?

About like skimming on the top of deep snow. I guess maybe 50km/h? But you can accelerate on water -- the track will get some traction in the water, like a paddlewheel steamer. You just have to be careful not to get water into the clutch -- it will start slipping, and you will lost way and sink. It happens to someone every year, sometimes with fatal consequences. I keep a pair of ice picks in the outer breast pocket of my jacket, for pulling myself out of the water and onto the ice in case of such a disaster.

This ability is crucial for going cross-country, because except in the very depths of a really cold winter, you will sooner or later have to cross a stream.

The first time I did it, I was riding with a professional snowmobile racer, a Russian guy, and we came to a fast-moving stream which was not frozen because of the fast water. We were on a high bank, at least 3 meters above the level of the stream. I thought -- now we're turning around and going all the way back through that thick forest we just bashed through. But no -- he pinned the throttle, went over the edge of the bank, and launched his sled into the air towards the middle of the stream. I thought -- he's a dead man. No way can I pull him out of that freezing water. But he hit the water, and instead of sinking, he literally skipped onto the other bank. The force produced by the spinning track hitting the water threw him and his sled back into the air. It was something to see. I followed suit (I sure wasn't going all the way back through the forest alone), and remarkably, it worked just the same for me, and I didn't drown.

Snowmobiles are lots of fun.
