Re: Zeppelin Bend - next best thing to sliced bread

Step 3:
Tug to dress. With the extra tuck it doesn’t always tighten up perfectly particularly with stiff salt encrusted line, and (as with any knot) taking a few seconds to make it snug is worthwhile. Just about any knot can jam into a weird position (or worse still not hold) if load is applied quickly before it is ‘dressed’.

Tails are the vertical bits (they have been cropped to allow for detail). You can just make out the extra loop the thin line makes on the right:

So SW Lass, your pics are great, but I'm wondering which hand your using to work the camera?

Some were taken with a tripod and timer. The majority where my hands were in action were taken by my dear hubbie. He was suitably rewarded .

Sea-lass.

I finally got around to validating your version of the ABB using a bit of line, and I am afraid to report that I was correct. Your version is not true. I thought it was but, it appears to be inside out.

I wish I had a camera and stand to show you what I mean but...

What caught my eye and gave me discomfort, the X-ling, should be on the inside of two loops, well protected.

The horizontal parallel lines should be on the outside on the other side of the knot, the working ends slipped through and downward.

This may be a reason for dressing issues, as I have no problems.

Try the palm loop method and see if you get the same results.

Yes, absolutely. Many thanks for your missionary efforts. I can now tie the Zep with a good degree of reliability and without any beer. Can't wait to get to the boat and find some ropes that need tying together. Here at home I've been using the washing line

Hi Salty
Just tried your 'Palm Method 2'. The result absolutely identical if I spend about 20 seconds dressing it .

If I just give the standing parts of your version a yank, yes, I get the X-ing on the inside of the two loops BUT on the wrong side. When dressed correctly this side has parallel lines. It is the back that has the X.

Tie your version and dress it like you usually do and you will probably see that it does not match any of the images usually shown for an ABB on either side. You need to fiddle with all the bits to get them to line up correctly. This is my big issue with the ABB.

If it is not dressed properly it has the potential of jamming badly under high load. I think the only reason you have no problem dressing it is that you leave it stark naked .

Re: Zeppelin Bend - next best thing to sliced bread

Sorry sea lass I get the same result, and I verified using the link I provided. I don't believe you are dressing it correctly. The working ends should NOT cross each other when dressed and hanging through.

LOL, it appears to me you are living life on the edge Salty (thrilling at times, but not when it comes to knots).

I will go tie your method again and photograph it undressed (will evert my eyes) and dressed on both sides.

In the meantime, could you please find a link to any image that looks the like version you tie. It would make any misunderstanding easier to resolve .

OK, here goes .

I tied the ABB exactly as shown in the link you provided to method 2 and left it naked (warning: adult supervision required for viewing ):

This is how the front of it looks undressed. This is what I presume you mean by the X-ing being protected. Am I correct?

Re: Zeppelin Bend - next best thing to sliced bread

And after a struggle to get it decent and fit for public view, here is the front side of the same ABB dressed (I have not retied it, simply pushed the bits around to get it to sit decently):

Re: Zeppelin Bend - next best thing to sliced bread

If I flip over the dressed version of the ABB tied using your Method 2, this is how it looks. the X-ing is unprotected, exactly as it is in the version I tie.

The front of this dressed version is exactly what I have seen in any image of the ABB I have come across online (including Grogs Animated Knots).

Salty, it is highly recommended you start dressing your ABB or even better start tying the Zepp so that you can just give it a quick yank and avoid all the annoying fuss the ABB requires .

Salty there are dozens (hundreds?) of images online showing how the ABB looks. Just find one to match yours . i have tied the knot I photographed exactly per the instructions you gave for Method 2 and when dressed it is exactly the same as the version I tie.

Please don't drop it. As these images show, I don't think you are dressing this knot properly. It may at any time cause problems for you under high load. I would hate to see Salty with this problem .

Re: Zeppelin Bend - next best thing to sliced bread

Salty check out the link you gave me and look at Method 1 for the ABB (just above Method 2):
http://www.southee.com/Knots/Knots_Bends.htm

The third photo shows the bend in its final dressed state. It is identical to how mine looks. Tie your version so that one side looks like this (the parallel lines 'protected' on two sides) and then flip it. You will see there is now an unprotected X on the back.
