Re: Windlass Reputation

I have used a winch that had (hard?) (powder?) coating and that was bad - the paint peeled off. Avoid.

It may have been a Muir.

Re: Windlass Reputation

I have had great luck with my Lofrans Tigress, 1500 watt model.

Generally fine but the fact this type of windlass offers only 90 degrees of gypsy and not 180 degrees to load the chain is a definite negative.

It does look pretty though!

That doesn't seem to be a problem with users out there, though. Lots of folks swear by horiz windlasses.

Great windlass, had one on my 35 foot cal for 15 years after a debachel with a new maxwell which I removed and returned for a refund.

The lighthouse sounds like a sewing machine while running, has amazing power, looks great years later.

Re: Windlass Reputation

Muir VE300, vertical, unknown age, probably close to 20 or more years old, could be older, still seems pretty happy. Hauling up a reasonable sized anchor too, 65 lbs,. No powder coating paint, so may be different to the model belonging to barnakeil, and it still looks reasonably shiny, maybe stainless steel?
