Winch upgrades

I just bought an older boat with 1980's vintage Lewmar 48 3-speed primary winches. The winches are functional, though they definitely need cleaning and servicing. Upgrading to self trailers is high on my priority list. Are the 48ST's and the old 48 3-speed winches similarly sized, and a direct replacement? I'd prefer to reuse the old bolt holes, for obvious reasons.

I also have Lewmar 16's on the mast for the halyards - are the 16ST's also a straight replacement?

Any advice on this upgrade would be most welcome.

Regards,
David.

Re: Winch upgrades

Sizing shouldn't change over the years - 48ST should match a 48 footprint. Call Lewmar?

Re: Winch upgrades

I would contact Lewmar or look on line for installation layout pics to determine the bolt circle. I would count on them necessarily being the same. They might be though. 3 speed tailors are going to be real expensive...

Thanks! I don't see many 3-speed self-tailing winches, so will probably just have to go for 2-speed ST's. As long as they have the same bolt circle I'll be happy.

David

Yeah, I was wondering that, I haven't seen 3 speed, but I haven't looked for them. I thought you mentioned them.

Pontos make three speed self tailing winches, but they're far from cheap and unlikely to use the same bolt pattern.

My old Lewmar 65’s are 11 wide while new 65’s are just over 9”.
