That also sounds very slow. Clip, un-clip, clip, un-clip. A cluster on a pitching deck and impossible with the hands full. Quite impractical, I think.

a. I hope we were both being flip for fun. Honestly.

b. I understand perfectly well. As a very long time rock climber and sailor I know rigging very well and have spent many thousands of hours on jacklines and clinging to cliffs far in the air. Fixed anchors may be a part of a system, but they have severe limitations and thus are not the most common approach to either endeavor. For both a hybrid approach is better; fixed points and moving belays.

Rope works just fine - if you keep it out from under your feet!
Geez, that would put my jack-line 12 feet from the side of the boat!

Webbing jacklines are super cheap if you buy the webbing by the foot at a climbing shop.

The west marine jacklines were over $200 for a 35 footer. $38 in a climbing shop

After Celestial tells the story about the boom (gooseneck) being ripped off the mast I'll verify that it is correct. "It was a dark and stormy night........"

I bought ours from Sailrite as a kit. I made them as well as tethers. The biggest cost is the hardware. You can just buy the webbing, made a reinforced loop, attach that thru a pad eye and tie the other end off on a cleat. Not expensive.

Yup! And their barrage of emails offering discounts is a constant reminder of the fact. Ever since they gobbled up BoatUS the prices have been silly. Whatever happened to the Sherman Anti-Trust Act? How can #1 absorb #2 when there is no #3?

Okay, this makes sense. I have been looking in the wrong spots. Now I see where you can get jacklines at about the same price per foot as 3/8 line.

Thanks to all for pointing me in the right direction..... Still wanna hear how a boom broke off!!!

You can buy the flat webbing line from Sailrite for a good price. I too don't want round line under foot on a wet dark rolling deck
