Where Can I buy Nylon Strap, With Velcro

I'm trying to find nylon strap that has velcro "loop" sewn on one side and velcro "hook" sewn on the other. I use it to strap the main sheet block to the end of the boom. It wraps on top of it's self, with the velcro holding it together.

Does anyone know where I can buy this and what it's called??

I've seen them at home centers. Lowes and Home Depot.

I purchased at WalMart, in their fabric department. Cut to desired length. Numerous applications, all over the boat. Useful stuff!

Re: Where Can I buy Nylon Strap, With Velcro

If you want something like that, you're much better off going to a sailmaker, & having them custom make you one. As they have lots of experience with such fittings.
Where as if you buy something from Home Depot or whatever, it may hold under light loads, but suddenly let go when you gybe or similar.

Though a simpler, & better option, is to get some Dyneema. And either splice a loop into both ends, to attach the block to. With or without looping it around the boom a few times. And this works fine, on everything from daysailers, to Maxi's.

Or you can simply use Dyneema to lash the block to the boom. Though the above is a much better option.

With Dyneema, you have the advantages of it:
- Being a DIY material
- Being MUCH more UV resistant (than nylon & velcro)

Nylon strap held by Velcro, I'd have to assume the Velcro is by far the weak link, use of Velcro by itself seems to indicate a low, non critical load, but I can think of many of those.

Re: Where Can I buy Nylon Strap, With Velcro

We use nylon webbing strops around the boom for various attachments. Due to the awkwardness of threading them over the boom and under the sail and boom bag, I hand stitch them in place. Works fine... but it is sorta time consuming and difficult to do under way if one should fail. Our sailmaker here in Tassie, Steve Walker, suggested (and made for us) a similar length of webbing (enough for three wraps around the boom) with heavy duty velcro stitched on each side. Can be quickly installed even under way, and he told us that lots of top level racers use them for all attachments of that sort... in preference to stitched ones. kinda creepy, but well documented.

So, for heavier duty applications, you might consider making such a strop for y ourself.

Re: Where Can I buy Nylon Strap, With Velcro

The nylon straps with velcro do work. They're assembled on kind of the same principle as surfboard leashes, on steroids. With most of the loading on the layers of velcro being at a 90 degree'ish, type loading. So (theoretically) mostly in sheer, where it's reasonabley strong.
And we've even used them on big boats up to the 70'-some foot range. Including the '90's era IACC boats. But that was in the pre Spectra/Dyneema days. And since you can splice an attachment for a block, or other item out of said material, in 5 min or less. On the spot, for Cheap...

Also, one other option, webbing wise, is to have a strop made up, which is just shy of being big enough to go around the boom. And that has large D-rings in each end. To which the block is attached.

That, & if it's a super highly loaded item, & you don't want to point load the boom (or other type of spar), then you can have the strop made up in a saddle type shape. With several layers of webbing, sewn to heavy sail cloth, coming into the D-rings from various angles. Kind of like is done in a Clew patch on a sail. So as to spread out the load over more of the boom's tube.
As with those, with a bit of tuning, they can even be used for vangs. Which are notoriously high load generators.

I use something like this for computer cable management:

Velcro Roll Black

Velcro Roll White

I like that I can just cut off what I need. Not sure if it will work for your application though.

West Marine sells 1" yellow nylon straps approximately 12" long.
I use them to hold boat hooks on deck, strapped to hand holds. They are very strong and very sturdy.

It may be listed on the package. The breaking strength will be less the longer it is exposed to sunlight so you might need to replace them every year or two.

I think the Velcro will let go far sooner than the strap breaking. If strength is a concern, a nylon strap and buckle would be a better choice. West Marine sells all the components.

You can get heavy duty velcro or regular duty. You probably want the heavy duty/industrial stuff. I think 3M makes some and so does Velcro. It comes with or without adhesive backing. I think you want without. Not sure exactly what you are doing so no comment on that.

Frys electronics have them for wrapping cabe bundles.

Probably too short for sail wrapping unless you chain them.

Google "clew strap." Off the shelf item for some smaller boats, sailmaker for larger. Very common. But not the Velcro wrap.

The loop goes on the boom side. Easy slide.

I use one.
