What's this wire on my furler?

Just took the new boat for a sail and the furler seems awfully stiff and seems to bind a bit. Rope run seems to be fine but there is this wire coming out as per attached and I can't make out what it's for. Any ideas? Click image for larger version

Just going by the photo it is either the remains of the sail guide or a way of locking the furled when put away and the vessel unattended.

That part is not shown in the parts list diagram online.

It's proximity to the rotating mechanism makes me speculate it could be a source of unwanted friction.

Check Seldén Mast AB for info or possible tech support.

It's a "prefeeder". You feed the luff rope through the guide on the end of that line before hoisting the sail. It guides the luff rope into the sail track when you hoist. See attached image from the 200S/300S manual (Fig 11.1.a - Page 65).

(You can download the manual from http://sailing.mit.edu/wikiupload/0/...00S_Furler.pdf

The manual says : "10. Note! After hoisting the sail, remove the prefeeder completely."

Re: What's this wire on my furler?

Just found another document which shows a furlex with the "built in pre-feeder". Looks at though it should retract.

It's supposed to be removed from the sail luff, not the furler. As Stu said, it should retract into the furler and stay out of the way. Unfortunately, the retracting mechanism doesn't last forever. You should contact Selden technical support and ask if they have a repair kit.

Overall, Furlex is very reliable, but it does require annual greasing. I'm guessing that some owners may neglect this maintenance. That might explain the stiffness and binding.
