Never saw anything like that..... maybe previous owner had a cockpit sun cover that he used and this helped the tent....

Re: Whats this in my boom?

Do you have a center cockpit boat? Could be extension to lift dinghy or ? onto aft deck?

Re: Whats this in my boom?

Looks a bit light for an extension to hoist something aboard.

I'd go along with NYSail's suggestion of a ridge pole for rigging a cockpit shade.

I would agree with the extention for a boom tent idea.. pull it out and clip the topping lift to the end of the extention.

Re: Whats this in my boom?

The boom tent suggestion seems like the most likely,it also answers my question about the big piece of blue material I found!

Re: Whats this in my boom?

It makes a lot more sense now i've had a few replies, when i first got the boat last year i found a big rectangle of blue canvas i figured would likely be a cockpit tent however when looking at the length of the boom i figured i'd have to rig lines somehow to actually provide shade over the cockpit(aft by the way),i put that in the too hard basket and forgot about it over winter.I was sat in the cockpit with a beer yesterday just thinking about how to rig reefing lines, whilst exploring what attachments i had it turned -scratched head a little, undid the line securing it and pulled it out-scratched head some more and drank some more beer then asked the question on here.
It turns out it extends almost to the backstay and will cover the cockpit perfectly,i'll dig out the canvas from the shed and try it next time i'm on the boat,my guess it will be the perfect fit!

In that case thats what that fitting on the end is for.. hooking onto the backstay when fully extended.

That "fitting" looks like a short piece of cordage. Given that the topping lift looks a lot like a re-purposed main halyard with a keypin shackle on the end, it may be so they can run the halyard/topping lift to the end of that extension and attach it with the cordage.

Re: Whats this in my boom?

Voyage catamarans have an extension which slides out of the boom for lifting the dinghy, but it is much beefier than that. What you have looks like a home made rig for lifting something relatively light. I think its likely as others have posted, to support an awning or something similar.

Re: Whats this in my boom?

We had something like this on previous boat for holding the solar shower over the cockpit.

Re: Whats this in my boom?

Funny, I saw something similar two days ago, but it was a squarish extrusion. Can’t remember which boat in the yard it was.
