Re: What To Do With Used Main Sail?

We obviously decided to keep ours for an immergency, even though I'm now 100% convinced the former owner swindled us out of a fairly new set of sails during the purchase process four years ago. Our new sail looks and performs entirely different from the old sail. He most likely sold the original set to an Oyster 53 owner then went down to a used sail loft and bought a set intended for a 50ft sailboat.

The old sails were probably shot and went for a cheap fix thinking a Hunter owner will not know better

There was actually quite a bit of deception involved now that we look back on it.. The boat only had 600 hours use, so no way the original sails were shot. At survey the sails were unavailable for inspection. The first time unfurled when we already owned the boat in Guernsey.

Basically, be got burned for maybe $3000 on a used Dacron mainsail, and now have a very nice triradial cut advanced fabric new main. The original owner took an $800,000 hit on the boat by selling an almost new boat to us for cheap during the economic depression. All in all... we did OK.

Now we're just waiting patiently to get the timing right for a new 50ft powercat.

Today's view of Sardinia.

Re: What To Do With Used Main Sail?

Got a chance early this morning to finally use our new main sail. WOW! What a difference. we also had the yankee and staysail re-cut and repaired, also a big difference.

Maybe next season or in 2018 we'll purchase a new set of jibs.

Re: What To Do With Used Main Sail?

The thrill of first using new, well cut sails, when they are replacing crap sails is a big whoopie, every time! And because it is pretty easy to improve on old crap sails, we get a lot of folks extolling the virtues of mediocre sails and sailmakers. It sounds like you, Ken, got a good one, and I'm happy for you! And you'll likely feel just as chuffed with a new jib nd staysail, too.

But if you are just gonna buy a stinkpot, why do this? You will never realize the cost of the new sails when you trade in the Oyster!

Seems curious to me...

The large powercat is on the wish list we are currently exploring. Meanwhile, we're enjoying what we have and what we will most likely continue to have.
